Looking to buy a flat screen to be wall mounted, but dont know whether to get plas or LCD??

Ideally, want a 42". I have around £600 to spend, could maybe stretch to £700

is it worth getting 1080? I dont have a blue ray, but might get a PS3 in the future

Take a look at the panasonic viera range, can get a 42" 1080p for under £700 , thats what im after and its the best picture allround IMO for SD and HD you can get, only one better ive looked at / seen is the pioneer kuro one, which is £1800 ish!

panasonic P42S10B with DVB-T £650 ish

panasonic P42G10B with DVB-T and DVB-S ( HD freesat ) for £758 currently at costco so includes 5 yrs warrenty, is what im after if its got Diseqc switching for the satellite part, having a hard time finding this out tho?

It's all personal choice really, both have their positives and negatives so you need to pop to the shops and have a good look at a few sets. If you want value for money, you won't beat this offer from Richer Sounds at the moment, I just picked myself a set up today, only quickly plugged it in before going back to work but really pleased so far, specs are:

LCD won the war.

Plasma is being slowly phased out. You can get a plasma TV cheap these days. No gaping difference, but energy use, picture quality are all in LCD's favour.

i think LCD is better up to about 37" then plasma is better

saying that get yourself down to richer sounds and take a look at them LED tv's they are superb and only about a cm thick

Have you ever sold commercial grade displays? Ever had to fully research what TV technology to place into a building that has to last 5-10 years? I have. Plasma is not the superior technology.

Plasma is done. LCD is next to be done. LED will then come as mentioned. Then that will be done. What part of evolution is not apparent here?

Generally below 42" go for LCD, 42" and above go plasma.

LCD TV's tend to be brighter than a plasma, so I would consider this if using in a bright room, if the room is dark then a plasma may be better. Plasmas have better viewing angles, so if you have chairs to the side of the tv, plasma is more viewable. Plasmas also show better blacks and whites than LCD.

Plasmas use more energy than LCD, and are a lot heavier too, something to consider if wall mounting. However I've got my 50" plasma on a stud wall with no issues at all. I also went from a 1080p 42" up to a 720p 50" and I didn't notice any loss of picture quality through the HD.

However, If i were currently in the market for a new telly, I'd wait a year for LED to come down in price. They are about an inch thick, light as a feather, use a fraction of the energy than LCD or plasma, and the picture quality of them is stunning

He isn't asking what TV to be put in a building that will be on 24 hours a day for 365 days a year is he?

There are 3 commercial grade 50' NEC LCD's sitting right in front on me right now actually! so yes I do know all about them!


but I am also REALLY into my home cinema and sport... and so in the last 3 years alone I have done alot of research and reading and viewing and have bought a total of flat screen 5 Tvs.... the smallest being 43 and the largest a 60' ALL PLASMAS.

Because they have the best picture, and they can handle fast moving images.

I don't give a fcuk about energy use and how long they will last being on 24 hours a day!

As above, at 42 " youre on the cusp of both LCD and Plasma LCD better below this size and plasma generally better above.

Be aware that plasmas tend to give out a lot of heat comparatively so if its to go in a small room you may find it gets hot! as it needs decent ventilation IME

plasma.......(panasonic aswell).....i've just had two loan t.v's while mine was getting a board changed and i was SO pleased to get it back....i had a 37" LG lcd..... good picture but "jumpy" so i took it back and they give me a samsung 42" plasma and it was shite...wasn't even good on HD........

plasma is a bit more expensive but if you wait till the sales you could get a lovely tv

Personally, I much prefer the better native contrast of a plasma panel and the much reduced smearing compared to LCD's. That said, I often do work for Bang and Olufsen who acheive superb picture quality out of LCD's with some well developed processing. A Beovision 7-32 costs ten times a Samsung or Panasonic 32" LCD though and therefore I wouldn't bother comparing them.

Plasma's these days last for a very very very long time and most have fairly advanced anti-burn features e.g. pixel shift. Commercial displays have benefited from advances in the display technology, power supply development and improved processing density and I wouldn't hesitate to specify one over an LCD even for 24/7 installations - most customers will upgrade well before the display expires!

But back to the topic - given the same input and processing, a plasma display will nearly always out-perform an LCD.

I did a bit of shopping around viewing different sets before I bought mine and I went for a 50" Panasonic plasma due to the picture quality. LED tv's are great but they weren't available in 50" so I went for the plasma and I love it

i was a tv salesman for 3 years, lcd isnt wat its cracked up to be. if u dnt have hd, and watch most things in non-hd your far better off with a plasma at a larger size. and there good value for money.

Agreed, although i would have taken LCD to about 40-42"

Look at the massive screens..... most are plasma. Could be wrong but remember something about LCD refresh rates not being to clever at bigger sizes... yet.

We have 2 50" plasma TV's (one is mine, one is Adams) - Mine is a Philips that I got 2 years ago, superb and has done everything I asked apart from PS3 connectivity.

Adam has just bought a Panasonic 50" Vierra - Excellent telly, but the image quality appears to be a little down compared to my old Philips. That said, if Adam wsn't tight and got a Virgin HD input going to the screen then the image would be better IMHO but he only bought it for use with the Wii and PC so

I went away and did loads of poking about and there is no way I would bother with an LCD set. Half of what I watch isn't HD and the LCD's just seem to almost hang with some of the images leaving a somewhat glitchy picture.

I opted for a Panasonic 42" plasma and I don't regret it one jot. It's not a top drawer model by any stretch but when I looked at it alongside other sets it gave by far a superior picture. It even got the 5 star What Hi-Fi award.

Best bit was it was under £600 through Amazon

iv got the new samsung led tv paired with sky HD and shit me its absolutely stunning, air weighs more than that telly and its so slim too

very happy with it and glad i bought that than the other types of screens

There is no doubt in my mind that Plasma TV's give a better picture over LCD especially when watching an SD source. With an SD source the picture feels more "organic" to me where as an LCD has that digital pixelated look to it. To be honest if your only going to be watching SD video and want quality then buy a 32" sony CRT TV from ebay for £20!LOL

Now I actually bought an LCD over the Plasma but this was nothing to do with picture quality. The reasons I did were because LCD's are ligher, generate less heat and of course are more engery efficient. I like TV but the picture quality is not a massive thing for me etc.

Also my gut feeling is that LCD's are probably more reliable than Plasma's but I never bothered to research if this was correct or not - I can't be doing with having to be home for swap out's etc.

As for 1080p or 720p...personally I think 1080p is over rated. Myself and the missus compared some video 1080p/720p, AVI upscaled to 720p on our 46" LCD and there was not enough difference for us to be really bothered.

my 42"sony is bong on in the bedroom but the same model 47" in the livingroom isnt as gud so it looks to me the bigger the tv plasma is the way.........still realy good tvs.
but there is a hell of a difference in picture quality the bigger the tv in lcd the poorer the picture i wudnt say a lot tho
