Hi knew to forum
.
Building a Mev Sonic7 Kit Car with a few mates, standard kit is 1.8 or 2.0 zetec engine.
Going to use car at knockhill circuit Track days not on road.
Going to use and have purchased st170 engine with gearbox (mtx285), loom, ecu, etc.
But also have ib5 gearbox from 1.8 as kit says, assuming i can get the mechanics working for either (rear engined).
Which is better gearbox for Job considering:
1 Light weight Kit Car (500Kg) believe ib5 is lighter of the two.
2 Mtx285 is close ratio dont know about ib5.
3 Knockhill short track, BTCC cars can do it in under 58 seconds, Is 6th gear needed Athough power should be about 330bhp/ton.
4 anything else ive not thought of.
Cheers sure there will be plenty of agro either way.![Wall](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/wall.gif)

the gearing is tall in the st170 meaning you need to rant the nuts off the engine to get its best, personally i would go fot the mtx75 from an rs2000.
oh and the 6th gear in a 170 changes nothing, 70 mph is still at just over 3000 rpm which i think is similar to most 5 speeds

i knew i would get it wron lol i dont really know to much on the tech side of it,
does 51 in 1st 72 in 2nd 98 in 3rd and 118 in 4th well mine does (and goes quite a way past the ford 134 mph top speed.
still rather have something that accelerates quicker, 50 in 1st might be good but its not what it sdoes in that gear its how it gets there. I only asked the other day which box would give better in gear acceleration myself, I was told a mtx75 would be good to but im not clued up on ratios and stuff like that

Transmission
- Transmission type: Getrag MT285 6-speed, close-ratio manual
- Clutch type: Hydraulically operated with dual-mass flywheel
- Clutch diameter: 228mm
- 6 speed transverse transaxle in 3 shaft architecture
- Installation length 332/322 mm with 106,2/98,25 mm bell housing depth
- Weight (without oil) approx. 45.5 kg
- Oil fill 1.7 liters
- All gears synchronized
- Reverse idler gear is speedgear 1st gear
- Two piece housing
- Cable shift system top mounted
The 6-speed manual transaxle is a three-shaft design with four fixed gear wheels on the input shaft and seven gear wheels on the two output shafts with a maximum input torque of 200 Nm.
In conventional transmissions/transaxles an input shaft transmits the torque to an output shaft on which the gear wheels are seated. The number of gears therefore determines the length of the transmission casing.
The 6-speed manual transaxle does not require an increase in the casing length to accommodate the six gears; this is achieved by using two output shafts. Using two output shafts allows the transaxle to be significantly shorter, enabling installation in a more confined space.
The gears are divided between the two output shafts as follows:

- Output shaft 1: first, second, fifth and sixth gear
- Output shaft 2: third, fourth and reverse gear All gears are synchronized, including the reverse gear.
The center distance between the input shaft and the differential is 187.85 mm. The transaxle weight is approximately 46 kg and the overall length is 332 mm including the clutch housing.

i would choose a 5 speed mtx75 personally, but it depends what gear selector you use as the ib5 and mtx75 have cable or rod change depending on what car it was from originally, the mt285 st170 is cable only
