only downside to that s6, is it being an auto, that sort of car like an m5 needs to be manual all day long

i wished the rs6 was manual, as i would have one of them, 14k and a remap = 600bhp

m5.its top of its tree....and as already said-awesome all rounder

how would you feel in your s6 when an rs6 pulls up next to you? rs6 are awesome though, ive had one but i think i would prefer an e39 m5 as an all round car

I think you need to drive both. I have a facelift M5 mint standard & its a great car & looks nice, my brother in law had the RS4 56 plate quite nice looking, that S6 is probably a really good car but it looks like any other Audi (except RS models) apart from the small S6 badge it could be a diesel. Don't buy a chaved up M5 with tinted windows & addons though as they look tacky !

You keep saying the Audi's are rare but are you aware that only 1500 rhd E39 M5's were sold/came into the UK 1999-2003, how many are left out of that 1500 ? E39 M5 is quite a rare car & from experience it is very very hard to actually find a good example, lots of the cheaper pre facelift cars have fallen into the hands of people that have chaved them up & lots not been maintained properly.

But how many MPG does the M5 get around town, and on motorway?? The OP is talking a £10k car, that's for, as I understand it, everyday use.

My M5 is sitting on 22.9mpg average. around town 19-22, motorway driving upto 28mpg is possible but normally around 26mpg. I know its off topic but i also have a 2003 V70R manual 300bhp out of the box awd, i prefer this car to the M5 for long journeys, i think the V70R S60R awd is a very under estimated car & with a remap they are very quick plus awd & lovely 5pot turbo sound, had mine for over 3yrs never been any trouble.

are you expecting a 4.2 litre v8 Audi to be substantially better on fuel than a M5?

After driving an RS6 an S6 would feel like a right cop-out... Should think the BMW would hold its value better too.

If you want a saloon, buy the M5.

If you need an estate, buy the S6.

My M5 is by far the nicest, comfiest, bestest car I have owned. I toyed with getting an RS4 instead but decided I would get bored of it. The M5 has the "sensible" thing about it if you are just pottering about but switch the traction control off and press sport and it can also be damn good fun to chuck about. They go round bends pretty well for big heavy barges too.

Mine shows 19-20mpg average although if I drive it really easy, can see 21 round town. On a run at 80-90 it shows 27.8-28.2 every time. And mine needs a pair of air flow meters on it at the mo

Thats not at all bad mpg figures considering it being a 5.0 and not a light car.

tough choice, evertime i see a m5 i think yeah m5 all day. But when i see a rs6 i think no, the rs6 is the better car!

personaly i'd avoid the s6 as they look too bland and boring, and i know the rs6 is more expensive and estate only? but it is nicer looking than the s6 imho!

Also, have you considered the 4.2 quattro a6? essentially the very same car as a s6 just slightly less power and about half the price!

But if a bland looking a6 with a bit of power is your thing, it'd have to be a 2.7 twin turbo, as with a remap they're not too slow being a audi s4 engine and a manual gearbox.

BUT for the price you'll pay for a rs6 - £13k ish? you're in a whole new field. I've seen tidy 911's on a 51 plate with reasonable miles in this price bracket.

The evo is a very very good all round package with good tuning prospects but the m5 is a very different car. more classy and special. i think you would get bored of the s6 very quickly.

M5 for me as im getting on a bit now lol
