Its a common choice in the kit car world.
Mine cost me about £57 all in new from the states - Alternatorlady on ebay
Guess the exchange rate has spoiled that option though ...

Should have added that pollyx used the same unit (and tension bracket
) but moved it to the other side - there is a thread on here about it

The only electrics it will have (other than what’s needed to run the engine) are things it needs to be road legal therefore no heater / wipers / window motors / central locking / heated screen etc i.e. just bulbs only. Even then, every bulb on the car is LED other than the headlights.
I defo wouldn’t be putting one of these on a ‘road spec’ or ‘modern’ car

It appears that alternatorlady doesn’t have any for sale at the moment but there are a few listed here :
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_kw=CHEVY&_kw=MINI&_kw=ALTERNATOR&_kw=STREE T&_kw=ROD&_kw=RACE&_ckw=DENSO&_trksid=p4506.m104.l 1199
I have checked my receipt etc and it doesn’t show any part numbers and the listing has now passed its sell by date so I will have a look on the actual unit tonight and get the ID off the name plate. The only thing I can remember for sure is that’s it’s a Nippon Denso 50 / 40 amp unit and is capable of one wire connection. The price I paid also included the wiring plug – Demon Thieves want £15.65 just for the plug …![](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/shocked.gif)
I believe it to be the same unit that Brise market - DT sell those at about £165 for the 40 amp version …
![](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/shocked.gif)
Note that there are options on the same model / casing / amp spec which affect where the multi plug and the main wire attach to the back. Then of course you can get the rewound versions - 95 amps, £485 …
![](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/shocked.gif)
I have the following if it’s any use :

I found this on the net when looking around for what would fit. Same dimensions etc but that version has the other wire / plug positions. I have the PDF version which is easier to read – pm me you email if you want it.
The block mounting bracket came off the scrap yard (off a pinto) but I cant remember the model / year / spec etc and have since machined the cast ford part numbers off it so it looked better painted![Red Faced](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)
The pulley was to my design made by Chris at CDF. It was originally for a twin v belt but I ended up turning the front v off and moving the alternator forward as the rear belt fouled with the dry sump pump pulley. I could have run with just the front belt on but I thought it better to take the front groove off and move the unit forward a belt pitch to a) give more manifold clearance b) save a bit of rotational weight and c) save a bit of leverage on the alternator bearing. Note that I also had the pulley made slightly smaller than standard to put a bit more charge back in during normal driving.
It is only because of moving the unit forward that I ended up with the stainless spacer for the mounting block shown on the picture – I originally modified the mount so the alternator bolted straight on with no spacers etc.
The belt tensioning strap was my design and is perfect for the size of alternator / belt length without having to slacken / re tighten the end that bolts to the water pump each time the belt is changed / adjusted (very tight engine bay). I had four of these laser cut, gave two away and stu twisted my arm and took the last one / my spare. Due to our current situation at work I can’t get any more cut but if you don’t get sorted with something I can send you the profile that any fabricator with a laser cutter should be able to upload and cut for you at a ‘nominal’ cost. I can do the same with the pulley drawing and model to if you wish – let me know![Big Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

i was gonna post " jap cars have smaller alternators" but thats been done now
jap cars tend to have tensioners rather than the alt as a tensioner though
theres a company , http://www.sovereignltd.co.uk/
these guys are prob the biggest aftermarket supplier and make them for a few companys who then label them as there own
hope that helps a bit

The label has the following printed on :
Denso Made In Japan
IC Regulator Built In
129423-77200
12v
10 12 11 - 1170
It has a diagram for the connection plug connections P, IG & L
It also has 6J 13 stamped into the label.
I am on the phone at the moment so can't send you the file until the morning. If you have someone in mind to do the laser cutting just check they can read dwg or dxf file formats - I will send it in both unless you tell me otherwise - pm me your email![Smile](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

that is hardley enough to run a cossie engine on full chat let alone a car with ancilleries, kit car will prob just be ok, the fuel pump alone can draw 15 - 20 amps ! then you have the injector coils, personally its too low the more i think about it for a cossy engine, when you factor in all the engine components, ecu and fuel pump.

They also really struggle on idle. Pete, I had a smaller pulley put on mine to try and get it spinning a bit faster at idle too but it didnt make much difference.
I will be hunting down a small but more powerful unit over the winter I think. I've got a lot more space now having it mounted on the inlet side. On Lee's Westy I have it running a full size standard cossie alternator on the inlet side which works perfect.
