Default Mk6 fiesta won't run and Engine Management light flashing - Edit - New problem!!!

Hi all

The mrs's 52 plate 1.4 fiesta has broken down, luckily just outside her work so I've pushed it back to the car park.

Basically the engine management light came on (she wasn't sure if it was flashing or not), and it started running like a bag of crap. She pulled over and it died and would not restart.

I went down and tried to start it. It would not start without throttle, but it would go if I gave it plenty of gas and it would misfire madly, but when I let the throttle off the management light starts flashing and it conks out.

I have plugged in my cheapy diagnostics box that I have used before with my focus, but it says connection error. Possibly its in-compatible with her car, I don't know.

I'm off down later to tow it home so I can investigate further. Any ideas of what it could be? My thoughts were coil pack but surely it would run, just very roughly?

A mechanic mate who I phoned says core plugs can leak, leaking coolant into the spark plug area, however I didn't have any tools at the time to be able to check it. Its not lost any coolant from the header tank though.

Thanks in advance

Rich

my 170 did something similar, it was water in the plug wells...

dried it out and cleaned off the plugs and ran fine again

yeah could be leaky core plugs or washer jets.coil packs are rubbish on them too plus your age it wouldnt surprise me if the throttle body and possible ecu has packed up

Thanks for the replies. I didn't have a chance to look at it earlier as by the time i'd got it home it was dark and chucking it down! I did start it and hold the revs at about 2k rpm, it was misfiring badly and stunk of fuel out the exhaust, so it does sound spark related.

I'll have a look at it tomorrow, I have a spare coil pack from my old 1.6 focus, so if its the same i'll swap them over and see what happens.

coil pack. pull a ht lead off piston 2 or 3 and see if it starts.

EDIT coil pack is the same as the focus ones.

put the ignition key in, but dont turn just yet, hold down trip button, whilst holding down trip button turn on ignition, after a round 5 secs or so , you should see TEST on the digital display, you can now cycle through the test and you will find one saying DTC, this will tell you the diagnostic code and hopefully tell you what the problem is.

Thanks again. I have one of those fault code reader things that I've used a couple of times on my focus but I don't think its compatible with the fiesta as it says connection error.

I'll have a look tomorrow with the dash thing and see what it says.

Thanks!

Got it running again! I had a look down the spark plug holes and although they weren't wet, it looked quite rusty down there like it has been damp. I looked a bit further and noticed there is a drip mark running down the air filter box and into the engine. Presumeably this is where its coming from. I'll take the jets out and put some silicone round them.

I changed the coil pack as I had a spare one in the shed from when I was having problems with my old focus, then she started first time

Going to get a new coil pack on it though as I can't guarantee the age of the one thats on it now and I don't want her breakign down again!!

Cheers all for your help

New problem!!

Engine management light is now on, I've done the dash test thing and it says no DTC's. It does also come up with a 0690 code after a couple of presses of the trip reset button. Is this a fault code?

I thought perhaps the ecu needs resetting so I've disconnected the battery for an hour and its still on.

Rich.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I know what you mean about it taking a while to clear the fault code, it just worries me a bit that When I plug my obd scanner thing into the diagnostic plug it says connection error, and when I do the dash test thing, it says no DTC's!

Hey guys,

I am having the same issue with my 1.6 16v mk6 fiesta. I got the car about 3 months ago, after parking it outside for a full days work the engine warning light appeared.

So off I went to a service station which had just 'serviced' the car for R1400 (100 pound I think), they said the coil pack, so I took it to ford, they said the same.

So I got the coil pack replaced and the engine light disappeared. There were no problems for about 3 weeks after this, the car seems to misfire.

I would really like so advice on this because I am not taking it a shop where the dude looks at the engine and says:
"Ah yes, spark plugs".

The car revs fine, pulls fine but if I am in and gear and I take the revs to 3000, you can feel the misfire, its not so bad, but you can feel that the power is not there at those revs. Once you are beyond 3000 revs its perfect again.

Any hints?

Much appreciated.
