cHIP,

I was told that cold water slows ur metabolism. Which overall reduces ur calorie burning count.

It was one of those random moments/facts that I didn't challenge, so haven't thought much more about the rationale.

Eating chocolate cake speeds up your metabolism and your ability to consume calories, but sadly like with the cold water you mention the effect is actually very small as far as im aware, which is why diets tend not to include a few stone of chocolate cake a day.

From a food calories point of view though, it has no energy, much like air, although also like air its temperature when we react with it can increase or decrease our bodies requirement to produce its own heat.

My understanding was that its recommended people drink around 2-3 litres of water per day, a pint is half a litre (568 mls) so 4-6 pints all in. Just water on its own I drink 2Litres a day+ and often 3 as at home I use a litre jug in the fridge for pouring which makes it easier to drink more.

So that^ can't be right but then I realised you were Dojj.

Ice cold water can slow your metabolism, however if your trying to be less fat and wanting to lose weight lowering your carb intake and sugar levels will have a far greater effect. Trying to overcome eating bags of skittles through drinking water is laughable.

that's only because you don't change the substance in any way when you drink it. but there's a lot of energy in the H component of H20 - you just need to separate it to do anything useful with it which requires a lot of energy to do.

if the human body seperated the H and the O then suicide bombers would need less explosives too i would imagine

There is far more energy in the O than the H

I'd rather believe bbc health site than a site any one of us can edit stuff on. Wikipedia should be just used as a guide and where does it say 6 pints/3 litres will be hazardous like you said? Obviously if you drink that much in a short time then yes but not over the course of the day.

Most healthy adults need between one and a half to three litres a day, so aim to drink six to eight medium glasses of fluid daily. Beverages such as tea, coffee and fruit juices count towards fluid intake, and may bring with them other nutrients or benefits.
You may require more fluid if you're very physically active or during periods of hot weather.
You can judge whether you're drinking enough by the colour of your urine. If it's a pale straw colour then your fluid intake is probably fine. If your urine is dark yellow, you probably need to drink more.

It happens yes but it is rare, certainly more rare than many other types of death and happens a lot in drinking competitions. Ten's of thousands die each year from alcohol related diseases but not everyone in the UK drinks it but EVERYONE consumes water but how many die per year from it?

too much of anything in a short period of time is harmfull to you in you consume it in large enough quantaties, even the air you breath

it's all to do with diluting the body and if you are sweating it out without replenishing it then you are losing something else along the way

and it's not even consuming a larger amount of water, it's the ingesting it part that causes the problems

Its already been explained.

The basic point is, if you drink HUGE amounts of water then it is possible to die from electrolye imbalances, usually low sodium. The water increases the blood volume and therefore dilutes the levels of sodium, potassium and calcium. Too little (or too much) of mainly the first 2 and you'll die.

Im guessing you wouldnt be at risk of water overload from beer because alcohol intoxication would kill you first?

dilutes the salts and minerals in your body too much I think.

as well as bringing life, it also is one of the most destructive things on the planet.
