Drinking cold water, and calories

Drinking cold water, and calories
Bored, so decided to work out how many calories you lose every time you drink a large glass of cold water:
Specific heat capacity of water: 4186 Joules per C per KG
Weight of 500ml of water: 0.5 kg
Temperature of ice cold water: 0 degrees
Temperature of water after it has been at rest in the body: 38 degrees
Energy required to raise 0.5kg of water 38 degrees = 79.5 KJ = 19Kcal
So if you drink 10 pints of freezing cold water and eat a packet of skittles for example, you will break even in terms of calories.

Conversely of course, everytime you eat anything hot, you effectively gain more calories than you expect to from the nutritional information on the pack as you also gain energy in heat at the same time.
Did the maths on ice cream though and sadly its still bad news, a litre of icecream is over 1000 calories and only about 40 needed to heat it up.

No mate, my secretary fetches the water and then leaves it sat till the ice has JUST melted and its at exactly 0 degrees then she pours it into my mouth for me so that I dont have to lift the glass, then she carries me into the gents and after ive had a piss she takes on the mammoth task of shaking my cock to get rid of the dribbles as it takes loads of calories to move that amount of meat around vigourously

Not quite.
The body will consume a small amount of energy to maintain your body temperature. Your metabolic rate is actually increased - blood flow to the stomach increases trying to keep its temperature at 37 degrees, where enzymes are happy, burning more calories. Spicy foods have a similar effect in that they consume a large amount of calories being digested, this is an increased thermic effect.
If you think about it, just because you have given yourself some hot food, the body doesn't just reduce it's heat output because it's got it's heat from somewhere else. It's heat output is a result of all the reactions which keep you functioning.

Yes it does reduce its heat output as a result, otherwise your body temperature would rise, and it doesnt do so. (although its not an exact relationship, depends how much heat its generating to keep you at temp at the time, if you were shivering your tits off cold for example it would be a direct relationship then)

it's all to do with your body becoming too diluted and the blood that's absoring the "enrgy" from the water can no longer do it's job
but it's been a whlie since i did biology so don't quote me on that

it's about 6 pints where you start to get to the point of serious risk of being dead, so the packet of skittles might just save your life

Water has no energy.
I dont know if its the sole cause of death but too much water upsets the electrolyte levels, the most important being potassium, sodium and calcium. Too little (or too much) potassium and your heart stops.

bloody hell, scary.
Its basically because cells 'trade' potassium, sodium and calcium to carry out their action and too little or too much stops it. And when its cardiac muscle cells, your in trouble!

I personally find it amazing that our bodies and lives depend on ions of sodium and potassium moving in and out of cells. Seems so simple yet its unbeleivably complex.
But thats a different topic!
oops, that was a reply to chips last post.
Yeah bananas are good, but have a look on here ;
