If you are getting the new new iphone, then the unlock should be out in a few days, thats if you are buying it on PAYG for Ł440 or Ł540

All other models are easily unlocked

If you are getting it on contract, you might as well stay on O2

There is a LOT of difference between 3G and 3GS, the speed is sooo much faster which just makes it a joy to use. I went from 2G > 3GS but my mate had a 3G for ages and said the extra processor speed and extra RAM makes it a much better device, especially when surfing, downloading pages and general usage!

Looking at it, it looks like the 3GS has the same vulnerabilities as 3G..
And can use redsnow ...

I just want a jailbreak!

Well, if they bring out a crack for the phone, yes it will, but you will probably lose out on the faster internet if orange doesn't support it.If I was you I would wait until your contract expired and get a new iPhone then.

They will probably have 3GSR out by then

In that case, ring up orange, get the PAC code, walk into O2 with the code and get an iPhone and they will transfer the number over.

The only reason carphone warehouse are saying 3G is better with 3.0 is because they need to get shot of all their 3G's!!! Why do you think Apple reduced their cost? Old stocks!!!

So your number/card is orange and ya missus' number is O2? I got confused on that bit, sorry. But the way I read it means that Orange won't release the PAC code until the contract is paid up in full!

As said tho, 3GS is crackable - see dev team blog - and will be able to be unlocked shortly using their tools.

right, got an iphone today, not the new one as its a bit too dear for too little extra as far as i am concerned, i now want to put my orange sim in it to see if it all works and give our lass the o2 sim if alls ok, if not will keep o2 sim as number they gave me was pretty good anyhow.
how do i now get this unlocked and which apps should i get, i think they do a power/torque one which tells you performance times is this right?

You'll need to jailbreak it and then install ultrasn0w. If you go thru my threads, there will be one about iPhone 3.0. Check thru that and all links are there for you. Also do a YouTube search on redsn0w so you can see what to do before you do it.

The performance app is called Dynolicous and is available for free via installous, again all info in my thread.

I'd get use to it first before trying to crack it really mate. Cos the last thing you wanna do is get confused with the home and sleep button while using redsn0w!!

Play with it for a couple of days first and do some Reading up on iPhone sites like modmyi.com and iphonehacks.com etc

my thread has moved to computers, consoles and I.T too (for some unknown reason)

make sure you got an uptodate itunes first then try this:
Disconnect iPhone and close iTunes.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Under Administrative Tools, Go to Services and look for 2 services.

Apple Mobile Device
iPod service

Both services should be started If they are not, start both of them.

Start iTunes and wait for it to finish loading.

Reconnect iPhone. Voila! It should see your iPhone.

Or

Leave the phone connected to the pc then restart itunes after.

Since I upgraded my 3G to 3.0, it doesnt start itunes automatically anymore but brings up a windows box asking if i want top open up photos or files.
I cancel this and start itunes manually.
It eventually finds the phone after about 30 seconds

Maybe removing iTunes and then reinstalling it might help? Or have the iPhone turned off, plug into computer, open iTunes, then turn on phone.

Mine did this after I accidently turned off the autostart for iPhone/iTunes connection. All sorted itself after a fresh download of iTunes.

Autostart is found in RUN > MSCONFIG > STARTUP. or by installing CCLEANER and clicking STARTUP.

@ St3v3 Mate, I havent got a clue when it comes to adding network places and all that Jazz, sorry. Whats the app called mate?

@ Scryby Something isnt right with it mate.

Try This: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495

If you have tried all what we have said and still isnt working, I'd go have a chat with wherever you bought it from and see what they say.

I have a bin you can throw it in

someone in the world has had the same problem mate, you just have to find the answers in google. I'll keep looking too.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but have you tried a different USB port or turned off your firewall before trying?

When you plug it in to the computer, a window pops up asking what you want to do, yes?
Have you tried selecting something like Open With and choose iTunes??

I might have this wrong, but anythings worth a go now!

Try control panel, add new hardware. With the phone connected follow the steps. Are your USB drives 2.0?
