Default Buying a car, 28 day cooling off period?

Have purchased a car, its cash and i've left a deposit (on credit card) while they get it ready (tyres, mot, etc)

I've signed some bit of paper saying i'm buying it

I no longer want it (or can afford it!) due to a change in my situation

Is there a 28 day cooling off period? do i HAVE to buy it?

You dont have to buy it mate , but you will not get your deposit back

and look at what you signed , you may be liable for extra costs if the garage spend money on the car as part of the deal you did

They will probably keep your deposit and may actually want to charge extra, due to the fact that they will have sent away the V5 with your details on it and the car will now have another owner. I have saw this happening before, though personally i wouldnt be wearing it. Probably best to go see citizens advise tomorrow

What do you mean " you wouldnt be wearing it " if they have sent the logbook off and put another name on the car then they have ever right to charge you whatever the car is devalued by because of this

I know it may not be this fellas fault he cant pay for the car but he said yes and signed his name so why should the garage loose out

Very sadly you will get your deposit back. If they refuse just threaten them with court, they all do!!! It happens to us all the time and we HAVE to refund the full amount.

Ps yes i am a car salesman and yes it is very annoying how people just change their mind when you have sent off a logbook and cant sell the car on till the new one arrives!

Because i know they can contact the DVLA and have this cancelled. Keeping his deposit is fair enough but i do not see how this is fair to be trying to charge extra money, the deposit should be enough, even if another name was added to the V5!!

Who's sent the log book off? WHY? he aint paid. Can cancel it yes but thats besides the point. Logbook will still be at the garage with the docs.

You lost your deposit it. When did you sign up? call them first thing tomorrow and hopefully they haven't gone too far with the prep.

The logbook will NOT have been sent off

I only sent the letter for the car Thursday and they said they dont even touch car till they recieve it. I was also meant to include a signed "spec sheet" but i forgot to add it in letter (thank god now!) so they shudnt have started any works yet....

Well if its not been sent you will have every chance of getting your deposit back! If its nit been sent then the garage has not done anything to warrant keeping the deposit.

Just a thought,if the car needed work they would have to have done this anyway to satisfy their obligations to make the car to a saleable standard?
Unless you specifically wanted something done such as paintwork which one person would accept but another wouldn't.

Its a long story but basically ALL vehicles sold have new tyres and are serviced. I'm not having done anything they will not have to do anyway. Its the way they are sold

Well,I can't see any other costs incurred barring them not making a sale?
