Perfect to tow with, some certainly would benefit froma better trans cooler, such as sierra pinto, on the A4LD 4 speed box, with which I used to tow, range rovers etc.
On us cars that used the same box, there was intentional draughted air over and around the box, but not enough room in sierra shell for it.
Heat is the main killer of auto boxes, I put a winnebago RV trans cooler on mine, which was the same size as the std rad, a bit overkill but my foot used to roast on a long journey as the heat came through the body, didn't even get warm after this.
You can also tweak auto boxes to make them better performers, on my a4ld I had adjustable vac can so change the set points to suit, a shift kit, so shifted on kickdown at 6700rpm, a switch for torque convertor lockout(so it didn't lock up).
I have had over the years at least 6/7 most of which I towed with, but unless towing just a small trailer etc, then consideration needed for trans cooling .

An example i would maybe like to throw in is...

You can't buy a Range Rover with a manual gearbox anymore (brand new). A lot of them will be used to tow or take children to school on smooth tarmac

Rangeys used the excellent ZF 4HP22, then 4HP24 boxes, which are pretty bullet proof, and can be upgraded, and made 2wd to fit on RV8's in cars etc.

And yep im still after a navara, but from research the D40s weak spot is the clutch, especially when towing, so the Auto is recomended and prefered for the job.
