I would be if we still had all of the things that made Britain Great, sadly those things are now gone, things like freedom of speech, respect for your seniors (just respect in general tbh) people looking out for each other, times when if you saw someone committing a crime you would give the little scrote a slap, now people look the other way out of fear of reprisals, I'm not sure Britain has anything to be proud of anymore, except perhaps our armed forces but even they get a rough deal.

when i lived in holland the amount of national pride on queens day especially with the majority of private houses flying the national flag was impressive and in general id say it was a more friendly and helpful society in general.
here where flying the national flag is often concidered racist theres much less national pride and involvement people will walk past and ignore you in times of distress for fear of getting involved. theres much less manners and general politeness in day to day life.

I find it funny, that people go on about "yeah, im out of here in a year, i've no plans to live here much longer, im moving to cyprus" etc etc....
Do you really expect to be able to go and live in another country, and for everything to be better there? or will you come running back when you or your family are ill, or you need to further your career again etc?
My mate moved to Cyprus with his family about 2 years ago, he said for 10months or so it was brilliant, like a long holiday but try to make good money, have a good career etc and its nigh impossible. Him and his sister worked in bars, making Ł200 a week and got by, his parents had money anyway. They are all back now, although his dad still owns property over there that he buys and sells now and then.
Not to say some people dont move out and love it but the UK is a great place in comparison to alot of countries imo.

when you move to another country you become what many complain about here. an immigrant taking a home nationals job and will come across many locals not happy with that.

You also become a minority, and can be treated with less respect. Much like it is here but with less police and courts to run to claiming racism.

Testing the future
if you've never lived anywhere else, how can you make a judgement?
good post from PeterRST
i also have to laugh at people who want to move away from this country - to places where the brits have basically colonised. same shit, different weather

Well, I'm 100% German, lived here all my life and only been to the UK for holiday/business trips so far.
I still love your country and culture, that's why I'm here on PF. :P
I think the real merits of Britain are those that are so normal for you that you don't even realize their existence any more. Things like the british humour, landscape, pub culture (not binch drinking!!! ), organized health care, full english breakfast :P, etc...
It's normal that you tend to overrate the negative aspects, we're doing exactly the same over here. But then again, we've got similar same problems as you do. Greedy politicians, chav youth with no plans for the future and no respect for people who have...
I think basically, it's about the same all across europe and even the always praised Australia. It's not Britain coming to shit, it's society coming to shit...
But for me, living in the shit would be much more bearable with a full english breakfast + cuppa tea in the morning and a good night out in the local pub with my mates in the evening. Hence the sticker on my MR2's windscreen.

Scottish first and always. British under protest, but I'd still defend the English against anyone else - whether they want my help or not!
I think H19-DJA just proved this wrong
Maybe someone would like to pop up the list of world-changing English inventions - thinking them up should take longer than typing them!
