A Budget 200mph car
As on Fith Gear be intresting to see how much the grand total bill will be to get that car to 200mph, wonder if it will be 200mph at Brunters? And how true their costings will be ie cos its 5th gear a bling gearbox will be silly like £250
So how much do u reckon they need to do to get the Lotus to 200mph @ Brunters?

I wouldn't mind getting involved in that.
After all, it was one of my boxes that got Sunny to his 178mph without breaking
I think I might drop them a line........

i was seriously thinking about getting one of those, maybe rethink if the gearboxes are chocolate, if i spent 22K on a minter i would be wanting my money back if it broke 50 miles down the road. cheers nomad

there is a Jag XJ12 shaped that can just about crack 200mph - Lister Jaguar Le Mans.
1991 Lister Jaguar Le Mans
One of only 35 Lister Le Mans ever built. 7-litre, 500bhp and 200mph, 5-speed manual. Only 2300 miles since new.
This car was commissioned by a Far Eastern Royal Family and remained in storage until one year ago.
This is a chance to aquire a very rare machine at a fraction of is new price which was a staggering £178,000 GBP.

What a piece of shit to chose to break 200mph . I would have chosen the Ultima as well if they want to get 200mph on a budget.
It's a good job they're changing the gearbox, as the gearing on these is flat-out on the limiter at 175mph .
They are going to have SO much trouble with finding a suitable transmission on the "cheap" . The transaxle unit that Quaife do for the Esprit is going to come out at well over £10k with all all the required parts .
The engine is a 32v flat plane crank 3.5 litre V8 and the power has been limited to 350bhp / 295lb ft torque in an effort to save the REALLY shit standard gearbox from a short life. Accordingly, it runs a relatively soft and reliable set up to achieve this (two tiny T25 turbos running a heady 6psi with NO intercooling ), even so the engine still suffers cooling / headgasket problems , so will cost BIG bucks to improve the performance, as EVERYTHING will need strengthening / improving on the engine. Even the GT car they mentioned competing against the Listers was fraught with reliability problems. It had charge-cooling on and still only made 450-500bhp and still destroyed drive shafts on a regular basis .
All I can say is good luck - theyre going to need it .

ultima is a good idea.
for a standard road based car, you are better off looking at the car with the lowest Cd, as this will require the least amount of power to get it to 200 mph (as has been said, and as posted on another thread recently about a calibra supposedly being able to hit 200 mph with just 400 bhp - i reckon on more like 440)
but, you've got to be able to fit in an engine capable of producing the power, and a transmission capable of handling it.
i would be looking at maybe a viper and a shot of nitrous.

Personally, i think the best BUDGET car to pick to do 200mph is.

The Chevy Corvette 5.7V8.. You can now pick these up for 12k. You get these 400bhp standard and i am guessing they can be turboed, look at the lingerfelter corvettes. 1300bhp and quarter miles in 9secs flat

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! lol, just cause you wrote a diddy little reply!
Thats the lingenfelter 650bhp one, cant imagine what the more powerful ones are like!
Corvette accelerated from 100 to 150 — into a stiff head wind — in 7.6 seconds.

i agree with the suggestion for the XJS Lister Le Mans, they may look a bit 'different' but i've just done a quick search on google...
they crack 200mph as standard lmao
how about one for 28k?
http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/find...lCarID=1707459
that's even cheaper than going the kitcar route ie ultima.

Can get em for a grand.
Got less drag than almost anything, inc most supercars.
6spd box is geared for 200mph with the right rims n revs.
2litre 16v turbo engines are good for similar sort of mental power as YBs once the shitty std manifolds and managment are thrown well away.
Theyd of done it for far less than the 25k its cost them to get the lotus in the first place, and FAR more interesting too.
Or a Supra, std bommomends are silly strong so internals can be left alone, another easy 200mph car is you talking autobahn.
I think i got some vids of Nicholas Kiesa (you know, F1 dude) doing an indicated 200odd mph in his R34GTR on the motorway too, and thats got a std bottomend and gearbox...
