Sick of the motortrade-need a new career.
For a while now i have been fancying a change of career, i am 27 and have worked as a mechanic mot tester since i were 16, the last two years i have worked self employed as a mobile mechanic which earns me a good living but im sick to death of wannabe mechanics and moaning bastards, i love engine building and fault finding etc but 9 times out of 10 its clutch jobs and generally towing my bolloks off in all weathers. If i could start a new career training part time in say electronics i would enjoy the odd job on cars inc working on my escort cossie. I fancy a career in domestic electronics, people dont like touching there wiring where people will always have a dable at fixing there cars
Has anyone here jumped ship?

I'm also 27 and been in the motor trade since i was 16, just been made redundant though by honda.....and now theyve shut up shop for 4 month down in swindon.
Change of career sounds great but at this time where there twice as many people gunning for the same job it may not be wise. I'm sure there plenty sparkys looking for work after being laid off, every trade is hectic at the moment with redundancy/ re-employment, think i'd be tempted to stay put atleast for a while...maybe get some sparky trainging in incase you feel you still want to jump ship.

well being an electrician is a good job but will need to take a 4 year course to get all the qually's or if you have a spare 5 or so grand then can get it done a lot quicker, i haven't jumped ship but know i enjoy electrics but tbh mate with the wannabie mechanics is a lot better than having someone presume putting a light switch in just involves putting the switch against the wall , domestic isn't the nicest tbh and you would probably enjoy industrial more, i do any how, working with people is the same no matter what you do as a job it's a fooking pain in the arse,
but if your seriously looking into becoming a sparks then look on the internet at your learning options, you will need qually's, i'm only on site experience it makes me a bloody good sparks, but i can't get work cos people need to see them papers nowadays with this recession

and RS1 it's more like 50 people to 1 application atm it's fooking unreal, but yes good words there maybe not the best to move for atleast a year but getting your qually's will not be a bad idea it atleast covers your arse

Ive been looking into courses and from what i can gather i can do a two year course one day a week for Ł4000 which will see me with enough qualifications to get me going, then future courses to progress. I would rather do two days a week and book work in for the other four to keep the mortgage in the green, yes i would be still working for moaning shits but i would have a goal, a new challange which is what i want. I were talking to a 50 year old mechanic today, two years ago he went on a plumbing course, he now works as a plumber and is very happy he made the change, 50 year old, what an insperation eh.

By the time i were qualified hopefully times will be different.
Also i have considered working for someone else again but i couldnt survive on the wages now im used to more, plus to be honest i do want a new challange.
Sorry to hear of your redundancy

i was exactly the same mate, i'm 27 and had been in mechanics since 16, i wasn't happy for the last few years exactly what you said fitting clutches getting covered in shit freezing cold, 4 months ago i finally quit, went and worked for my mates shop delivering and installing electrical kitchen equipment, dishwashers, ovens, washine machines and stuff, i work 20 hours less a week i'm on slightly less money than what i was but i can live with the difference in pay as i have more time for my pj's, i havn't looked back since i changed job's! everybodys noticed a difference in myself, i'm a lot happier, my hands are clean everyday! no stress, i still do private job's on car's and it's made working on car's more enjoyable,
hope you do well in what you decide to do, for me though it's the best thing i've done

its all about the 5 pot
Im 26 this year, been in the trade since 16, only ever had one job, same garage and luckily i get on with my boss like hes my brother, but it does get tedious, day in day out, mot here, clutch there, but its what you know. People are all going for the same jobs and its full of knock backs. I often look at jobs like service managment, or service advisers, but i think it would be too hard to get out of spannering all together.

i jacked the motor trade when i was 22.
Fuck that!
The pay was wank, 6 day week's just didnt do it for me
Got into flooring for 6 year's and enjoyed that but again hours were shit.
I'm now in the leccy trade, building panel's for ship's.
I dont touch the wiring i just put it together. The next one were doing is 33 metres long.
I'm now on more money and only working a 4 and a half day week. Finish at dinner on a friday and have the weekend to myself

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Moneys not everything, I`ve worked for people who make you work 6/7 day weeks and although the money is good you have no life. I would prefer a job that gives you the weekend off to relax. Lifes too short to be working all the time.
