take the 5th gear cover off and check that the nut holding on the 5th gear is tight, they're bad for coming slightly loose and letting everything in the gearox move little and whine on the over run, very easy to fix if thats all thats wrong,
worth a try anyhow mate

yes its the 1 nearest the passenger side wheel
as above it could be a synchro mate, but i've fixed a good few now with the 5th gear prob, so defo worth a try, i do this everytime before pulling the box out just in case
and yess you'll need to drain the oil to do it,
if it is slack put plenty lock tight on it when refitting

There is no nut holding he 5th gear on, its an interferance fit and is held in place via a "C" clip.
There is no 7mm allen key drain bung on the bottom of a RST BC type box
Removing the 5th gear end cover does not require the oil draining from the box, approx a shot glass worth will leak out and thats it
