Some cat d do need a vic check. Cat d is the lowest of the scale usually very light panel damage, stolen/recovered lock damage etc.

cat d is an uneconomical repair as around 60% of the value, cat c is damage exceeding the value of the car.

My other halfs civic vti is down as a cat c, when it only needs a bumper and two rear lights, not that the lights really need doing as they are only chipped on the bottom edge, it seemed a bit harsh to me.

taken from the internet,it seems to match all other sources ive read...
INSURANCE CATAGORIES

CAT A

Vehicles that have to be completely destroyed.

CAT B

Vehicles that can be sourced for spare parts but the body shell has to be completely destroyed.

CAT C

Vehicles written-off as costs of repairs are more than the value of the vehicle , but can still be repaired and returned to the road.

CAT D

Vehicles written-off where costs of repairs are less than the value of the vehicle.

CAT X

Vehicles that are not recorded as damage vehicles usually sustaining very light damage if any. Usually relatively new or stolen recovered vehicles.

Cat D's are lighter damage in the main, where as Cat C's are likely to have taken a good whack, maybe needing to be pulled straight etc??

Usually there is around 1/3 of the market value knocked off for a recorded car, just remember you will need to reflect this when selling.

Cat C appears on the V5, Cat D doesn't.

As for knocking off 1/3 the value, perhaps for Cat C but for Cat D? I don't think so. I think it's more that any listing will put off _some_ buyers completely, who wouldn't buy it whatever the cost.

As said above my's cat c and only needs a bumper, def didn't take a good whack as you put it as it was only a 2mph crash.

I might be wrong, I'd been under the impression (read it on a forum most likely lol) that it was listed on the bottom of the front page of the V5, where it says "special details".

FACT it does show on the bottom of the first page. Ive had 3 cat c cars and they all were listed. Cat d cars are not listed on the V5

cat c cars are quite often needing bumpers/lights etc
the quote about them being harder hit isn't the case,
i've seen stolen recovered/lock damage go cat c
seems that anything over 5/6 years old almost always goes cat c,
just trying to get the older cars of the road
i've seen cat d cars that need 1/4 panels and chassis legs jigged
and cat c cars that need a lock set, its nothing to do with the damage
its to do with the value

Everything I have ever read stated that cat D was light damage where as Cat C was extensive damage, guess not.

No - if he car needs a vic check then you have to put it thru to get the v5 for the car... as the 38 quid you pay for the test gets the logbook sent to you... no VIC no V5... the vosa station puts the details and pass date etc on the computer and then this will generate your v5 for the car..

cat d comes with logbook... cat c no logbook .... usually .
