106 gti / saxo vts ?
which is the better car ?
been looking on pistonheads and it seems you can get quite a lot of the above cars for circa £2k. Everyone i speak to says they are fun to drive too. The only issue i see is that i dont fit in the car so will have to move the seats back further.
I do miss my 306 sometimes (1.4) and have driven a 106 QS which i fitted in ok, i found the pedals were slightly too close for comfort though, i assume theres a way to get round this ?
I only want one as i cant afford a teggy R and this seems to be the closest to its raw ability !?
thanks!

I've got a QS, great fun and cheapish too, just be wary of them hitting over 100k - this is where most problems start cropping up.
Prefer them over the saxo, look nicer IMO, not quite as "chavy"
Oh and you get used to the pedals
Have a gander on 106owners.co.uk
Cheers

the 106 is a far better build quality though. Weve just sold 106gti to my brother, and after driving his best friends VTS i was shocked at just how poor the Citroen actually was.
The pug will hold its value better as well imo.

I sold my maxo vts back in nov. I had it 2 yrs after buying it off some dodger().
As said the 106 holds money better and prob looks betetr but at the end of the day its the same damn car!!!
you certainly dont need to spend 2k to get one semi decent either!
You dont fit in the car? how tall are you? I'm 6ft 4 with size 11 feet and space was never an issue and neither were the pedals!

Has to be the 106 Gti Looks better, doesnt have that wannabe boyracer look
Leather, Electrics cant go wrong. Looks smart. Handles well, good runaround
Not one thing bad I could say, except just a little small for me
Here my 106 gti I sold

Both cars have just the same boy racer image, i mean if i see a young guy in 106 gti id think "boy racer" just like i would a vtr/vts.
I cant imagine too many people would disagree with me if their honest
But who cares though, as long as you dont drive it like a boy racer

I like all my cars the way they came out the Factory.
I wish I still kept mine. Pedals were not a issue I got used to them considering I have size 8 feet. It was a little to small for me. Have 3 kids.
I can't stand the added bodykits, 18" rims and stupid bean can exhauts..

To add to the thread i drove my boss 306 hdi the other week with my size 11 work boots on, lets just say im glad i didnt have to drive far, it was proper pissing me off my normal shoes which are abit slimmer might have been ok but that was the first thing i noticed when i got in the car, how close the pedals were

I actually almost had a accident. While I was braking My feet was still touching the gas pedal
Takes about a week to get used to. Like learning a new dance routine

aye right!! ha ha! was a decent wee car for decent money!! MATE!
I totally agree with you on the pedal front chop. im same height as you and size 10 feet and never had an issue with the pedals.
I used to prefer 106s but IMO the facelifted VTS is cooler! i also think the build quality is exactly the same on both cars. As mentioned above i think that was probs just a good example of a 106 and a bad example of a Saxo.
When compared to clio 172s i dont think there is that much in it speed wise, maybe handling is a bit better but saxos/106 do handle well.
clios are probs just newer which i think means a bit better put together

Peugeot pedals are close together and different if you have never driven these cars
As I said it took me a week to get used to the Pedals. I might be size 8 but I am tall 6ft

i had a 106 gti for a couple of years you get used to the pedals after a while but to be honest i hated it pure chocolate suppose if you drive it slow just pottering about wouldnt be so bad but if you drive them hard they fall to bits went through 2 standard clutches and a black diamond one too also back axles are crap unless you can find someone who can put brass inserts or bearings in them and they also have crap power steering pumps the list is endless cheap french crap

Apart from the obvious cosmetic differences and interior spec, when they were both released on 14" wheels the Saxo had Michelin Pilot SX GT 185/55x14s and the 106 had Pirelli P700 185/55x14 tyres. At about T-reg the Saxo VTS went onto 15" wheels with 195/45x15s as standard ( the VTR stayed on the 14s ).
Peugeot did their dampers in-house whereas Citroen bought theirs in from an external supplier. The 106 had a slightly thicker rear ARB at launch ( not sure if the VTS adopted the thicker one partway through its life ) than the VTS.
At launch the Saxo VTS was on Bosch ECU and the 106 on Magneti-Marelli. I think Citroen also used a Sagem one and Magneti-Marelli later.
The early Bosch VTS ECU had a 6800rpm limiter and the early 106 one had a 7000rpm limiter.
I remember spending ages deciding which to get when they were new. They did feel slightly different to drive ......more down to individual cars than any real advantage over one another....and the fact that even the same car will feel different/lap quicker or slower (all else being equal) on different makes of tyres

both the same motor. bit unpredictable wen there gonna break tho, my girlfriend had 106 gti and that done a clutch and head gasket in 2 months may have been my slightlty heavy foot tho lol. also my mate had saxo vts and done 2 gearboxes, 3 driveshafts and 2 clutches. lol. never the less they are fun to drive when they work bit like a ford! none of them are my cup of t but if i had to choose it would be the pug gti. better looking car.

its all about the 5 pot
My mrs has got a blue saxo vtr, 51 reg and its one of the best cars we have ever had. Its reliable, nippy and cheap to run, and has loads of room, i can drive it comfortably 6'2'' and even though the pedals are pretty small, my size 11s only get in the way when i wear timberland work boots !!
