Default could cutting my floorpan weaken the car

Hi guys

Im fitting a mtx75 gearbox into my mk3 escort but the newer style gear leaver wont fit under the centre console. im trying to keep the car looking standard inside and outside so im planning on cutting the floor and weld in a sunken box to make the leaver fit. Before i go about cutting and welding the shell i wanted to know if it would be safe to do so or could i be weakening the car? A few pictures of what i plan on doin...

As a panel beater of many years you'll be fine if it's just that small area.

Nice car. That won't weaken it.
