Hi m8,
I personally use 15/50 in my 2WD but same applies to 4x4, I really do not see the point in expensive Castrol Edge 10/60. I certainly would NOT go lower than 10/60.
As to the tapping sound does it only do it briefly when started from cold or even when its warm, they all do this from cold.
Have you got an in car oil pressure gauge if so whats the pressure when both hot and cold and also the millage of the car?
The reason for the tapping is the hydraulic lifters that are filled with engine oil when started from cold the oil needs to circulate around and fill the lifters.
2WD had a offset gudeon pin and as a result suffer from "Piston Slap" the design was changed on 4x4 and hence they do not suffer from this problem.
When was the last oil change as it may be the top end is sluged up.
If oil and oil pressure are good I would say a new set of lifters may be in order.

A 15W/50 IS lower and thinner when hot than a 10W/60.
Castrol edge is not that good, would be much better off with either Silkolene Pro S 50 weight or Mobil 1 from Matt Lewis, at a very good price, 01922 692424.
Depending on your mileage it is most likely that tappets are either knackered or gummed up with varnish.
Either way it might pay to try some valve system lube from Wynns as this will de varnish them as best it can, the actual oil pressure is held in by a steel ball bearing being pushed by a tiny spring against it's seat.
A tapping on first start is fairly normal, and nothing to worry about.
How many miles has it done, new tappets are about Ł70 from matt lewis, genuine INA ones, easy to change, might as well do belt tensioner at same time too, if a bit old ?
4wd pistons have a slightly revised wrist pin as said, but soem do still suffer when cold, though it is harmless anyway, untill it does it when warm like mine!!

silkolene pro rs oil is good oil. Ive used it twice now and its been ok. Im using ford valonle 10/50 oil at the moment cause i got 8 litres off my mate who works at ford for 20 quid. When my cossie 4x4 first starts up its quiet for about 1 minute then the tappets start to get noisey give it another 5 mins and the noise goes away.

No wonder people get tapping with such thick oil.
Don't know why cossie engines are so different to all others, I'd use 5w40, good protection from cold, and not so thick when hot to raise temps.
People think thicker equals better.
Edit/ Another vote for silkolene pro.

Thicker oil will create extra heat also however as it's being worked/squeezed harder through tolerances etc.
5w40 is an every oil, changed regularly do you fine.
Fuchs is a good oil at a good price, from gsf.

Silkolene is a proper fully synthetic oil unlike Castrol. Not sure whether Mobile 1 is. Read Oilman's explanation threads as apparently some oils claim to be fully sythetic but are infact hydrocracked mineral oils. I've just switched from Castrol edge 10w60 to Silkolene Pro 10w50 and been very impressed. The oil pressure is the same and for some reason it didn't burn any oil at all on a 500 mile round trip where as the Castrol would have used a good 1/4 litre.

Hi guys this is my first post and i would like to say that I had the same problem with my car: noise from tappets and low oil pressure when warm and all of these gone away when I started using Motul 300V 20-50W.
Also do not use oils with lower viscocity less than 15 on cosworths because YB by it's nature is operating at high oil temperatures and anything less than 15 is becoming too thin. If your engine has high mileage you can use Motul 20-60.
