Hi m8,
I personally use 15/50 in my 2WD but same applies to 4x4, I really do not see the point in expensive Castrol Edge 10/60. I certainly would NOT go lower than 10/60.
As to the tapping sound does it only do it briefly when started from cold or even when its warm, they all do this from cold.
Have you got an in car oil pressure gauge if so whats the pressure when both hot and cold and also the millage of the car?
The reason for the tapping is the hydraulic lifters that are filled with engine oil when started from cold the oil needs to circulate around and fill the lifters.
2WD had a offset gudeon pin and as a result suffer from "Piston Slap" the design was changed on 4x4 and hence they do not suffer from this problem.
When was the last oil change as it may be the top end is sluged up.
If oil and oil pressure are good I would say a new set of lifters may be in order.
