Dual mass flywheel on Mondeo TDCi
Afternoon,i have a 03 Mondeo TDCi runaround and think the Flywheel is on its way out,as is quite loud on pull off in first gear only, and tick over, will this just get louder and stop me from drivin it full stop or does anyone know what happens when they completely fail as havent really got the funds to fix it this side of Christmas and am doin loads of miles in it each day.

if the flywheel fails, normally the center part just continuously spins instead of just damping, mening a full loss of drive.
factors now make std flywheel coversions for many cars now, might be worth a look

the starter gear is on one part of the flywheel and the clutch face is on another part, both these parts are bonded together but i'm not sure which is bolted to the crank, all i know is that we broke about 3 vito gearboxes when we had these problems a few years ago and they replaced the dmf's with solid flywheels

i have heard of the clutch being changed and not the flywheel and then the starter fooks up,then the starter gets changed and does it again, at my local auto factors there is a conversion kit available that does away with the dual mass.

my uncles car recently had the clutch done... cost £700 to fix at ford...£400 just for the flywheel... he was told to get it done right away or the clutch and starter fooks up aswell...common problem they said at around 80,000 miles

get a conversion kit, around 150 to 200 for the solid flywheel and clutch, the starter situation is thedust from the dual mass jams it up,,,, another reason for the conversion !!!
only one comapany makes em but they sell em to LOADS of others,,,, so looks like a few make em if that makes sence !!!

but that combined with the fact mine rattles like a CUNT at idle is worrying. i assumed my problem was the clutch release bearing as it goes quiet with the clutch depressed but i guess issues with the clutch plate/flywheel or whatever might do this too. also the car doesnt go down the gears very smoothly, could this be another symptom?
mines a TDDI by the way, i assume it still has the DMF? its on 185k miles.
also, IIRC the transit flywheels are the conventional 1 piece sort, so sourcing one of these from a breakers may be cheaper for DIYers amnongst us than a 'single piece conversion' from some company.

interesting, i was having starter issues recently, removed the starter and noticed the huge ammount of shit over it, completely stripped and cleaned it and it was fine...for a couple of weeks. now got another starter from a lower millage car thats fine.

take your starter off first. if loads of silver dust comes out of it when you shake it the flywheel is toast. the silver dust is the bearing in the middle of the flywheel breaking up.
can get solid flywhel and clutch for 180 quid round here. probably worth changing the slave cylinder as well while its out, thats another dumb idea by ford.

HOW FUCKING MUCH!!!!!
this is what fucks me off with ebay these days,,,, its either second hand fucked shite, scammers who dont send stuff of pricks who sell stuff for MORE than the retail if it,,,,, AND THEN RIPP YOU OFF ON FUCKING POSTAGE
euro carparts sell the largest range of clutches at the moment, they also have the largest range of duel mass flywheel conversions at the moment including the jag(cough ford) diesel engines that no other company offer at the min
AND THERE ALOT FUCKING LESS THAN 350 QUID,,,,,,, WITH THE SLAVE CYLINDER TOO !!
at that price you would be better off buying another dual mass !
oh word of warning, i got a email from valeo saying "due to the value of the pound, our prices are gonna be going up in the new year" clutches are gonna go up cost price by upto 10% meaning,,, well thecompanys will be adding there bit on that so expect prices to rise by 20 to 25% in the new year too

As I was looking at getting one for a Megane recently.
And could only find them at prices similar to above.
.

Bet that was a 1.9DCI? same as I was looking at.
This was the best I could fine, and it was local, but just fitted a clutch in the end;

my mate reckon that in turkey ford didn't use dual mass on mondeos 01> , maybe the turks kick off at anything they feel is going to be a rip off , the conversion which iirc is a luk comes from turkey or somthing like that, the problem is one i see time and time again and people don't know about it, i make sure they don't rattle or just buy a diesel vectra which are very reliable and the glow from the manegement light keeps you warm in the cold

tdci Mass duel flywheels, bang or knock on tick over, mine was replaced by a back street garage, but there were independant ford guys.
They would only do it if Ford products were fitted as they said they wouldnt warrantee my work in all it cost not far off a £1000 for all work and fitting.
The bigest problem was the subframe possitioning afterwards,it has to be spot on else it wont steeer right.
When you do the flywheel you would be best doing the rear crank seal aswell (£1.00) as the flywheel has to come off to do this,so 2 jobs for the price of one.
It may also be the aux pully tensioner, which rummbles and gets louder and worse, this is just a new tensioner and pully maybe £150 and doable by yourself.
steve.

regards starters theres place by us thats a complete shit hole and the fella who works there has a million bits of starters and altys strewn about, it all doesn't matter when he recons a starter for 25 quid for pound notes or say brushes in a alty for a tenner,i always try a recon at the specialists or second hand cheepie before spending say a ton on a exchange starter from the local parts factors

decided to buy myself a low mileage writeoff and do a straight engine and box swap. will probably replace the flywheel, clutch and rear crank seal while its all appart. looked at engines on their own and its a joke. £500 for head and block?! if i can get a 50-80k motor thats been pranged itll be well worth it. cant see the car being worth fuck all on 200k when i come to sell it, but with a new motor and box it may fetch more. plus itll probably work out cheaper by the time ive ebayed the remnants of the writeoff.

if you buy a low miles minter with only slight damage, you could repair it with your car and sell all the good stuff from your old car,its tried and tested so it will sell. my local scrap yard just broke a complete 02 mondeo td and the fookin lots gone, the engines gone to bulgaria, the taxi lads buy mondeo stuff left right and centre.
if you do this try to buy cat d as it doesnt show on the log book where cat c does and requires a vic check at vosa.

Problems with 2.0 tdci 6 speed clutch conversion
Hi I have a 54 2.0 6 speed mondeo estate. Just had Clutch changed to solid one and had problems. There is a rattling/blowing noise. Starter motor started making noises like not cutting out. Ended up replacing it and garage said it had no wear but cost me £150. Just had car back to garage as he said it was gear box but changed oil and ended up putting another starter motor in under warrenty. Noise still there solid conversion does not seem to work. Anybody found it does work with the 6 speed my garage struggled to find a supplier. Company wont replace clutch been checked and nothing wrong. Is there anyway I can get them to replace or refund money. Nearly 1000 pound down and still broken car. Thanks
