'Welding two engines together'
Clarkson reckons the Aston Martin DB7's engine was made by 'welding two mondeo engines together' and I was just watching old top gear with the Brabus roadster, when hammond says the V6 engine was made my welding two 3 cylinder engines together...
Serious question.. Is that really how its done? I've always wondered...

no they are cast the same as any other block! could you imagion the stresses that the welds would have to deal with and also the fact that each weld on every engine would have to be spot on!

im sure it could/has been done (im sure top-boss welded 2 v6's together...), if you do 100% welds, but they are very time consuming and hard to achieve, so for a 1 off engine i cant see it being a big problem, but i would guess they had a different cast for the production model and similar components would make them almost identicle...
could be wrong though... would be interesting if anybody on here has attempted or thought about it...

I'm sure it can be done, I remember reading a mag with a kit car that had 2 R1 engines made into a V8....

i think, you can build a engine by bolting 2 engines together like this:
engine1 \ / engine2
crank1 O O crank 2
...........O.........
one bottom part with a shaft that connect the two crankshafts to the clutch...
all you have to do is to built the bottom part an make a program for a programable engine management.
greetings from austria!

I'll have to look at that, ive always wondered about W12s etc....
On a slightly different tangent, a mate of mine reckons the subaru boxer was so called because the pistons met each other in the middle... so the crankshafts (yes, two) were on the outer ends of the engine, where normal people find the camshafts

20K+ Super Poster.
It's been done over 20 years ago, catch up.
Best one I ever saw was RD350LC enigine welded to another, to make obviously a 4 cylinder 700cc 2 stroke, a magazine did it as a spoof, but it backfired as a guy then lent them his bike on which he had done the very same!!
I think(not sure) Nick Croom had hand in it as well, formerly of SS 2 stroke fame.
It has also been done with a Z1300 six as well.

One 'Hack' engine was only made for the test car and never made it into the final cars which ran a 3 litre Austin Rover V64V, designed by ex-Cosworth employee David Wood, this was a 90 degree V6 with 4 valves per cylinder (hence V64V), with belt-driven twin-overhead camshafts per bank producing either 250bhp in 'Clubman' form or 380/410bhp in 'International' tune. It was (and possibly still is?) the first ever engine designed specifically for rallying - most other manufacturers continue to rely on a modified production block and cylinder head.

correct Steve, it was done using R1 heads and internals though a custom V block was cast to house the 8Cyl crank, it was a brilliant idea and sounded like an F1 engine revvy as hell!!!, I havent seen a kit finished though, I forget the name, they may have gone bust after designing the new engine and some of the styling wasnt as per Dax or caterham levels of looks

surely the phrase 'two engines welded together' would merely imply that the cast was taken off a real 'welded' 1 off, thus giving a re-maufacturable mouldd to produce the bottom end from
