How old is he?? as usually it is something he will grow out of!

When he goes to bed, give him something to sleep with, with your scent on! so maybe the t-shirt you have worn that day.

a good slap?

continue going back to him or trying to sort it may result in irreversible damage!

at the end of the day its a dog and it shouldnt control you!

You just got to put up with it am afraid, dog will eventually learn howlong doesnt get a response and stop.

The T-Shirt with your scent is a good idea.....done that before, and my puppy turned into a 7 stone Doberman

we have two siberian huskies, had them from 8 weeks.they howled like crazy for a while.my missus was borderline having a break down.i had to physically hold her in the bed to stop her going down to them.it wouldve been the worst thing ever to do.
still leav a ticking clock in there.it will help.but as well as the above mentioned t-shirt with your scent you should invest in a plug in the wall D.A.P unit.it looks like an air freshner but its warms up and gives off a pheromone that the female adult gives off from after having the pups.worked a treat for calming ours down.makes them seemlike they are still with her.(i know all females are different but it does work)

you have to bare in mind they are so so dependant on the parents and you are technically now their parent and after being removed from mum they think you have gone too.

bare with it mate, you have a few mnths ahead of unsettled nights im afraid.its like having a baby

Worst thing you can possibly do is go down to it when it howls, that will teach it that howling is the correct way to call you.

he's howling cos he's scared and he wants his mummy....all you can do is leave him to howl - our little dog did exactly the same when we got him, it is hard and you just want to go down and stroke him and say there ther little one...but you cant, cos like kids they get used to attention, and when they dont get it they let you know!

he will grow out of it - our dog was 7 weeks old when we got him and he stopped howling after about 2 weeks - just give him a nice bed and some toys, he'll be right.

When we first got our staff he howeled the first day, so I slept downstairs on the sofa and he was on the floor. The next night he was howling and I told him to "Shut Up" about 4 times and never howeled again thankfully

As most people ahve said if you go to him when he cries, he will learn that is how to get your attention and will continue to do it.

cant help comparing him to our marriage he builds up loads of browny points only to cock it all up in one fell swoop-the loveable little shit!!!

Every dog is different. My lab used to bark and whine for hours and hours at night and then start again at about 3-4am in the morning. She was in the kitchen and used to scratch on the door like crazy! We tried all the stuff mentioned on here and ignoring her and it didnt get any better. We then just let her sleep and the side of the bed in her basket. Some people say you shouldnt let them do this, but it hasnt done her any harm at all and she's now as good as gold and has been ever since we let her sleep next to the bed!

Used to let mine sleep where she wanted.

But then i woke up to find she had somehow moved my pillow from under my head and was asleep on it, leaving me with no pillow.

so i bought another pillow but she decided one pillow wasnt enough for her and i woke up to find her on both... only an incy king charles, tiny thing :s

so she slept in the kitchen from then on

The puppy will soon get into a pattern.
My wife went down to cuddle oor Westie during the night when he was howling. I lot the plot with her after the 2nd night with her complaining to me and the dog howling down stairs. I just gave her a pair of ear plugs!

Our westie howled for only 3 nights (if I remember correctly), then perfect since.......
We left the radio on and my wife bought the dog a small hot water bottle from Asdas.

8 months later, he knows when it's bed time and when to shut up.

Unfortunatly, I've been away on a business trip for 2 weeks, so my wife let the mutt sleep on our bed to keep her company! I've returned, put the mutt in it's cage as normal and came down the next day to find the cage door bent, 1 bar snapped off and bent round and also managed to to buckle 4 bars! It's the sort of damage I would expect from a rotty or something, not a flipping 8mth old Westie!

Last night he was barking like mad again after being used to sleeping in comfort! I lost the plot and well......he never made a peep after that!

In conclusion, never let into the puppy! If you want him to stay in it's cage all night, then do it. They will soon learn!

I let her off due to the circumstances as she actually stayed at the flat for a week & back in the country for the rest.
There's just no way he'll be doing that when I'm there though.......

Tried to fix that bars last night with my hands..could I fix them......NO CHANCE! Christ that dog is strong!!!!!!
