Teen jailed for kicking puppy to death

A TEENAGER has been jailed and banned from owning a dog for life after kicking a four-month-old puppy to death.

Anthony James Gunn, 19, of Buttermere Avenue, Whitehaven, was sentenced to 160 days in a young offenders institute following the horrific attack on a young Staffordshire bull terrier.

The dog suffered massive internal bleeding and a tear in its liver.

Whitehaven magistrates heard how Gunn and another man were seen by a five-year-old boy coming out of a house at Cleator Moor with the puppy under one of their jackets. The young witness then saw Gunn start kicking the puppy before throwing it into nearby bushes.

Prosecutor Dick Binstead told the court that the boy found the puppy crying in the bushes.

The police were called and the puppy was taken to a vet where it was later declared dead.

Gunn, who is currently in custody following an unrelated offence, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal when he appeared at court on Friday.

Simon Ward, in mitigation, said Gunn acknowledged responsibility for the offence.

Magistrates were told how Gunn had been affected by the murder of his father, scaffolder Tony Gunn, in December 2002. Mr Gunn senior was stabbed by 22-year-old Richard Smith three times and suffered a punctured lung during the attack which occurred in Southampton.

I help out with a staffie rescue and the latest dog in had fooking battery acid poured over him and this dog still loves people.

Sorry about the rant but if anything p1sses me off its animal cruilty the fookers that do this should get alot more than a "holiday" (TV, games console) [/b]

I understand your point Chip, but whats the point in executing him if he doesnt feel any pain. He could have just killed the puppy without it feeling any pain but he chose to kick it to death. He deserves the same treatment imo. Unfortuantely he isnt going to be executed

The puppy didnt need to die, it suffered because he is an unpleasant person who likes others suffering.

He DOES need to die, but he doesnt need to suffer first or be killed by anyone unpleasant.

Im not looking at it from a revenge point of view, just purely a clinical approach to it that he is alive and shouldnt be.

Too much suffering already in this world, and too much hate, i dont want him publicly kicked to death while angry mobs of thousands of people cheer in a middle age fashion as that does nothing but promote more violene, just a nice quiet execution with a holy man there if he wants one would be fine by me.

What benefit to society do you think torturing someone can possibly have?

Do you think that the people watching and shouting encouragement and throwing fruit or whatever become better or worse people as a result of participation in such an act, or do you think that they are doing exactly what he did "i will teach that puppy a lesson for biting and shitting all over the place" followed by "i will teach that kid a lesson for hurting that puppy" what lesson do you think someone can learn if they are just about to die and never get a chance to learn from it?

I deal with the youth justice system and understand some of it's complexities. When you have a young person like this who has some serious mental issues locking them up will only make their issues more serious. They don't get to live it up but they are given mentoring and pushed in the direction of reparative justice while they are at an age it can have lasting effects. For instance a lad like this would probably be councelled and assessed to see what his mental issues are and if their is potential will probably have to work with animals under strict supervision to try and repay what he has done.

It's all a bit nicey nicey I admit. But murdering people is too a medival solution imo and I don't want to pay for someone to be in jail for the rest of their life only to come out and murder someone.

I ABHOR cruelty to animals in same way I do I abhor child abuse - in both situations the victim is powerless to defend and in many cases (with children I mean) unable to tell anyone or stop what is happening.

I would have qualms what-so-ever about taking an iron bar to this lads head till he lies bleeding and crying in the bushes, and then continue to kick him untill he dies - and I am not a voilent person.

I think the lad is scum, pure and simple, and class him in the same league as child abusers and rapists.

And anyone who harks on about his "deranged mental state" - bollocks. Who's to say he isn't using that as an excuse to do whatever the fuck he wants to do? My friends dad was killed also, but he doesn't go around kicking the life out of innocent, defencless animals does he? No... This kid is just typical product of the shit, reckless and irresponsible society we live in and something needs to change....

My gran had one years ago. Lovely little thing, we were little and used to play with him all the time. Daft bugger used to sleep in front of the fire. We'd watch him have doggy dreams, wake him up, play with him. Never minded any attention.
