Default Camera people - Lenses......

I do want another lens for my camera, a Canon EOS 400D. I know I have posted about this before. Sorry! I am looking at 2 lenses, both have their relative merits, but its a case of working out which has merits which are most significant. I want to be able to take better photo's at trackdays etc and get up closer to the cars.

Lens 1.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

http://www.camerabox.co.uk/product1.asp?ProductID=4202

This lens obviously has the longer focal length of the two and is Image Stabilised, but the 'f' value range isn't as good (I think, not that I have a clue of the relevance LOL).

Lens 2.

Canon EF 70-200mm f4L USM

http://www.camerabox.co.uk/productDA...ProductID=2282

I don't think there is any doubt that this lens is better quality, but would the difference in quality (that I would notice) offset the fact that it lacks focal length compared to Lens 1? Does the f4L aspect mean that it is f4 across the whole focal range? Where the other lens is f5.6 at its maximum length? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Do you need 300mm of focal length to take the types of photo's that I want? Like this....

Both lenses are similar money and to be honest, I really don't want to spend more than that. I'd prefer not to spend that much really, but I do want a decent lens too.

Discuss. (Please!!).

At a track day at Snetterton this year.

And for £125 you cant really go far wrong.

Also using the same camera as yourself

are you so worried about the aperture range when shooting in raw? as you can adjust the exposure in "lightroom" to a massive degree

The aperture is everything.. it's how fast the lens is (relative to its focal length).. You can persevere with slow lenses with tricks like IS, but eventually if you want to do it seriously you will need some fast glass, like f/2.8.

in all honesty if you are going for good pics like that and a good lens you need a good tripod too.shooting in raw isnt the best imo.you should be taking pics properly rather than adjusting them in a photoshop.

if you are taking pics of track racing.use shutter priority at around shutter speed 125th of a sec for panning pics like above.

christian, are you using themshonky icon options on the top selection button? as they are really a complete waste of time. really to get good pics you should be using apperture priority or shutter priority.

the icons,ie landscape, portrait, sport etc dont really do much to make the pic different.and are you using maual focus or auto focus?

your camera will need around 300 to get the same shot,

out of the two lenses you picked i think id get the 70-200mm and if the pics are not tight enough get a 1.4 extender as focus speed is a lot better on this lens if i remember right

best thing would be spend a more on the canon 300mm f4 , but i know were not all made of money , sadly

aint that the truth. theres a few specific prime lenses i'd like but cash is an issue
