Question Fitting a new roof skin.

I have just bought myself a new mini as a project, the main problem with it is that its rusted badly around the sun roof.
I've had a quick google, and a few people 'in the know' have told me that the roof skin is the one replacement panel you can't buy although i did find one place that does them, but at £220 quid they can keep it!!
i was originaly going to just cut the rot out and rivit a plate over the hole, smooth the edges in and paint and sticker up but thats never going to look great.

so i was thinking... can i find a mini breakers with a rotton mini with a good non sunroof skin, cut the roof off from the bottom of the gutters where it can hardly be seen, cut the rot out of mine and bond it over the top with this stuff
http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...ct.do?pid=6781
or is that unsafe?

its having a rollcage too btw.

You can buy a complete mini that is not rotten for a few quid from a car auction.

Why weld anything, just buy one that isnt rotten, seems a lot more simple and cheaper.

you would be able to see the join if you looked down into the gutter but its not going to stand out. TBH if you made a nice job of the edge all the way round there is no reason why it wouldn't look factory. I think its a plan, just got to find a good condition roof skin now

Interesting idea.
Afaik Minor Roofs are only attached by press fitting - being aluminium. The Traveller roofs are held on with pin nails straight into the wood!!!

So, what you're sugesting sounds perfectly OK in terms of 'good british engineering'. I imagine Morris/Austin would do the same if they'd made the mini these days.

Besides, if you have a cage you wont need the negligable strength the roof 'skin' offers. Just make sure its all smoothed so finnicky MOT men cant moan.

Bonding would be fine mate. If you need some metal bond, give me a shout. I demo Fusor products (plastic repair and metal bond)

Mini in the foreground had a new roof fitted, i.e. chopped 3/4 up, dipped and then etched primed. Not a problem
