If you can maybe get a bit more together and get something else ? I've got a Vaio and it's the nuts but if you just want something for arsing about on the web then £400 will do the job.

Ah ok, well a 98 laptop, im guessing you need very minimal spec, they are 10 a penny nowadays. Of course the only problem you might have is battery life so you might need to get a new battery for whichever one you get.

Alternatively, get a more up to date machine (or use the one u have) and load windows 98 OS onto it or Dual boot, ie xp/98 on the same machine.

Although Im not sure how well say a USB>Serial adapter would work with your equipment.

Something like that link

Easy enough to upgrade the RAM and HD from the £50 you save

Only downfall is Vista. Get your local friendly PC bloke to "upgrade" it to XP

Hmm, ok.

He also said he needs a lot of storage space. SSD disks are well expensive for not much space!

Don't these EEE's run Linux? I'm guessing he would want a laptop running XP or equivalent as his son is 9?

some ECU software wont work on the NT kernel, needs pure DOS. hence win98. altho you can always just install win98 ona newer laptop

and you can still buy laptops with serial ports, theyre normally higher end ones now, still loads of reasons IT people need serial ports you see
