my cousin has one. 190 odd bhp which is enough imo for that car to keep you cruising very comfortably. dont know bhp on 330 but from memory think its like 230ish and dont know what they are liked compared to the 325 but depends what you want from the car and budget but 325 is a very nice car

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Guessing your talking about e46's
330 would be my choice, 325s dont seam to have the getup and go like the 330s I dont think it helps that they are pretty lardy

Neither; if you go for the 330i you'll spend too much time worrying about being spanked by an ST220 that cost half as much

Gary ST - funninly enough that was another car on my mind - was preferring something a bit smaller bodywork wise thou' and it would have to have cream/dove grey seats - and blue or grey colour body. - they always appear 2-300 miles away.
I am just a bit dubious of spending my cash at moment on a large engined car due to the perol prices, there are loads of 3 litre+ cars for sale - I dont do many miles but as it seems very few of them are selling - I am wondering if prices are going to drop, and dont want to buy at top end.
always had turbo cars so normally aspirated performance cars are a mystery to me.
interesting that most prefer the 330i though.

Team HOTHOT!
Funnily enough this 320cd has blue bodywork and dove grey leather - 50mpg and 160bhp, what more do you need

Graceland - trouble is - ITS A DIESEL
dont do enough miles to warrant a diesel car - would rather have a powerful car and use it less.
whats your blue one in the pic ?

Funnily enough, the one in my pic is diesel too - 3 litre, 230bhp and 380lb/ft torque - who needs petrol

thanks will prob look for 330
only want it till new Focus RS comes out then if the spec is good will be ordering one, dont want to sink too much money into a car for a year.
Stu - if you want to pm me a good price on the 325 I could be persuaded (see its been for sale a while now )
cheers

Spanked is the right word! Been on the receiving end of it in my 330
My mate's ST220 has impressed me no end. Not as punchy as the BMW at low revs but the positions reverse when youre above say 4500 rpm, and every 500 revs more, its advantage just gets bigger and bigger
Was a while before I could talk about it openly...it's made him very cocky!

I heard stories like this before.
Front wheel drive means less transmission losses, probably more than wipes out the very small bhp advantage the BMW has? (Except low speed grip). Plus the ST is lighter isn't it? And they rev like crazy!
...So all in all I'm not really surprised to see the red face !!

Gary that 217 does sound a bit low as you said. I've heard they get about 199-200 at the wheels as standard which either means they are very efficient on drivetrain losses (FWD helps on that) or have more flywheel bhp than quoted and def more than 217!
Slightly off topic I know, so to gesture back towards the topic I've done a search and come up with numbers like 192-195 wheel hp on E46 330i's...meaning about 126-128 wheel hp / tonne (vs 137-138 for the ST220)

Hi,
I have compared my rolling road results to many other ST220's and despite their increased flywheel figures they didn't make any more wheel bhp than mine, in this case mine was 176bhp.
Squelchs ST220
251bhp @ the fly
176bhp @ the wheels
Telboys ST220
251bhp @ the fly
176bhp @ the wheels
KettersUK ST220
249BHP @ the fly
167BHP @ the wheels
Solid's ST220
248BHP @ the fly
160BHP @ the wheels
So god knows whats going on there, I personally think rolling roads are a bit gay, they are a laugh for shoot-outs though.
But I have raced enough fast cars and held my own if not been quicker to know its putting out the right power, plus it got to its top speed on the German autobahn and a bit more; so I'm happy
Last note, it previously rolling roaded at 248bhp with exhaust, filter and bluefin - all of which I have removed with no obvious loss in power.

if you dont do many miles why not buy a E39 M5, they are becoming really cheap, normally all well looked after (check vanos as they are expensive) luxury and performance, get a pre 2001 and no hike in tax.

Hey don't worry, it seems from what Gary said, I'm very wrong anyway!
Guess rolling roads are subject to a lot of calibration issues. BOth ST220 and 330i are great and fast cars, hard to put one above the other.
M5 on the other hand, well that's a whole different and higher ball game. They seem to gain another 2 cylinders and 100bhp with each new version. Maybe a V12 next time, around 2012?

Anyone know what the 0-100 times are for both cars (ST220 and 330i)?
Theres plenty of 0-60 info around but having the 100 would mean you can get a handle on 60-100 which is a bit more telling...

HOLD IT!
16 seconds? That's impressive!
Now you will think I have too much time on my hand but I found 3 figures for the 330i: 16.6 (autocar), 17.0 (evo) and 17.3 (top gear), average is 17.
Taking off the low-to-mid 6's for 0-60 gives you about 10.6 secs for the more important 60-100. If ur figs are right the ST220 (16.0-6.8) does it in 9.2 secs
OOOPS!
Can't find any legitimate references to 16 secs, only 18 plus! That changes everything!

Very impressed
“hey interesting subject! It got me looking for info and I think you should all try this:
there's a couple of videos on youtube, probably more of a 330i doing 0-200kmh and an ST220 doing 100-200kmh. Get them both loaded up in two explorer windows, reduce size of the windows and separate them so you can see both on your screen at the same time.

Start the BMW video first, then after about 2.5 to 3 seconds start the mondeo one. This means they both pass 100kmh at the same time. Then watch them both go up to 200kmh. Which one gets there first?”

No, it sounds about right from my memory of the beating, which happened around 60-100mph, 1.5 seconds is believable (unfortunately)
About 2 car lengths gap I’d say by 100, it was pulling away at a kind of fast walking speed by then
