Default What oil and water temps are TOO high?

As title, in degC.

Seems a lot of BS and misinfomaton about this, so info from the folk that know, track vetrans, Mike/Martin, etc etc, would be good.

For coolant, it depends on the split between water / glycol and the pressurisation of the system. The higher the pressure, the higher the boiling point of the water.

I personally would not be worried at seeing 120°C on my Cossie (although I would be wanting to come in and cool down at that point).

This should give you a good idea .

I actually now use this in my car, and it's the dog's danglies!

Regarding oil temps, again it depends what oil you have - I use the Silkolene 10w50, and this is supposed to be safe up to 130°C before it starts to break down. I have never seen it go above 122°C.

Mike- Thats cool then, water wasnt getting anywhere near that high, but I was seeing 120degC oil temps in no time, so gonna get an oil cooler ASAP I think...

Ryan- Thats a bit low? Is that while queuing for concourse judging?

Yep, as the ambients are only going to get warmer!

The temp of 122°C for the oil was on a really hot day with a cooler fitted .

If 90 is too hot for water temp, why is it run in a pressurised system to allow it to go past boiling point....

NOT having a pop @ you Ryan (it's your opinion and you're enititled to it), do think this is a good post as many people panic too much about these particular figures - I await the "anything past the O in N O R M" comments that will surely come....

EDIT: Damn, my typing's getting slow!!

oil temp NEEDS to be at or slightly above 110 degrees to burn off water vapour iirc the majority of oils start to breakdown arond 125 deg

About 5mins hard drifting was enough to do that on my car Mike! Lot less frontal airflow etc of course.

Water was fine tho, dont think it even got much above 100 that I noticed.

Given what you have just said about the water temps and the fact that it is a drift car, it might be an idea to run one of the water-cooled oil coolers (like DaveEscos had on his car), but relocated out of the way in the engine bay . I think an air-to-air one will be an accident waiting to happen .

You must have more cooling capacity on your Cosworth than a Veyron to achieve those levels on track .

Not beind the front grille it wont, be fine there, and thats where it fits best too.
Fuck putting it behind bumper, I lose the front bumper once a week on the road, never mind drifting (i lose the back one then too )
TBH there little room in the bay anyhow, they bastard expensive, and chances are with longer action the water temp will get higher too, so will just put extra strain on it it cant deal with.

Oil can go well past that IF its good synthetic... more like 140 before you will have problems.

Motul 300V Competition starts to make problems at 140+ and you loose oil preassure at 150. 300V Le Mans can do the job a bit longer.

We had problems with overheating oil on one of 4turbo.eu Evo's during track days last year. The car wouldn't have any oil preassure at idle after ~15 laps.

We also had problems with oil temps on 2.5 litre Impreza but big oil cooler cured the problem and manages to keep temps at 110-120 degrees at slow uphill sections.

I am not sure about water temps it's probably a lot car dependant, I know that Cossies tend to run much higher temps then other cars. On Subaru I would be very worried seeing 120 degrees (you can actually hear knock inside the car on standard car at 120 degrees indicated by ECU before det control cuts boost and ignition).
