Default builders again

just put my planning for 2 storey ex in. In the mean time thought i'd get some quotes from builders. I want to do most myself to try and save on labour. I plan the builder to do all brick work and roof, also put the floor in as they work off it.

Im hoping to dig my own foundations, then they can start with pouring them to there taste.

Ground floor is a garage, normal founds , states 150mm slab in garage. I take it i dig founds. pour concrete, then build walls up to DPC, then level the garage floor out and add the 150mm slab with DPC then. Then continue with walls. Am i correct or is the slab done at another time?

also i need to add a new soil stack. i have the old brick manhole inspection things. what is the accepted way to add to these. can i just install new pvc pipe in and cement around hole used to get in. Or do i have to change to a proper new chamber?

thanks

You can do it either way. This time of year some builders prefer to leave the concrete slab till last then if it rains its covered

You can only add to the manhole if theres room, if it is down the run and youll have to go in level with the invert with a half round pipe like you see in the bottom but a few things can affect this hard to say

OK thanks for that, the main thing was i wasn't sure if it was poured at the same time as the founds, but obviosuly not then. I will consult BC reguards the manhole then as they need to signed if off. Thanks

na you pour founds. Build footings up to dpc then you can either do the slab OR if doing it later cut some 1m wide strips of visqueen and build these into the wall at dpc course so they lap onto the hardcore for the base. When the base is done then you lay visqueen down and it forms the sealed membrane required lapping into the dpc course. Have i done that clear cos i find it hard putting stuff into words

Also check whether you are in a Radon area as you may need a Radon barrier, I'd advise insulating the concrete slab so that the garage can be used for living space if so desired in the future.
THE MOST CRUCIAL ADVICE IS DON'T PUT YOUR BRICKIES ON DAY RATE!!!!!!!

Just had another thought.....I can really recommend self leveling Agilia concrete. Its more expensive per cubic metre but its well worth the premium.

Yeah Agilia is the dog bollocks. We scored a contract with Lewis Homes after we went to a development of theirs and their gaffer told us it cost them 4.5k to cast an 18m cube floor. We asked for the price breakdown and nearly half was labour . He hadnt even heard of self levelling and was shocked when we said we could have done that floor for 2k (conny and ONE man to supervise the pour @250 quid)
Radon is a right fooking con. Round here we just fit it regardless as the NE Derbyshire BC (both Bolsover and Chesterfield) are inbred fuckwits. They demand bore holes on nearly every job. We are NHBC reg and their man will accept trial pits rather than grands and grands worth of bores.
Quick rant time. If the Govt want all these new houses built just cut the red tape and little Hitlers at building control!!! ...rant over....needed to say that
