i am a self employed bricky ,since 1991
you wouldnt catch me going cards in and having to be on and of a site whwen told.
Its nice to be able to have time to pic the kid up or take her to school now and then .When a job is done and its 3 or so just to pack up and go home is quality, instead of stringing it out and being board to death

Im a brickie. I can also class myself as a 'builder' too though as i am skilled in many other areas, especially joinery.
As for the CIS card i couldnt give two shits TBH. I am on the books and i prefer it. Dont have to fook about going firm to firm, dont have to go looking for starts when it looks like a jobs coming to an end, dont have to do any books etc etc
Im on price and earn as much as any other bricklayer on the cis, and gauranteed work through winter doing fook all and getting paid even if its a foot deep in snow, as long as i turn up....
Being on the books has a lot more advantages, holiday pay is another...

being self employed means you only pay 18% tax and Ł2.05 a week national insurance.plus you get a higher hourly rate than books in plus a tax rebate of several hundred pounds every year AND holiday pay after 13 weeks. if thats hassle ill take it every time

holliday pay,i dont see it as an issue personally. If i couldnt aford to take a few weeks holliday a year there would be a problem.
Most of the lads i know could easily put a ton a week away for hollidays ,
How much do you get cards in?????.
Granted i dont do sites anymore ,as i get my own contracts ,but my best mate works in exeter and spends 2 to 3 months in thiland every year and a couple of weeks in the summer too You show me a man who is cards in get that sort of time off or be able to afford it.

it depends what your after really but most of our lads want continuity and would rather take say Ł100 a week less if it means them staying employed, in my office we get about 10 calls a day from lads who have worked for us or are just wanting a start becuase there not much around at the moment.
we had 2 joiners leave our company in december and rang back up for a start 10 weeks later as there was nothing around.
