Default Overheating Problem

Ive put this up on the bimmer forum i use, but i know you fellas are clever so ill fire it up here to;

Tonight i was going down to a mates and we were then heading to glasgow, me driving.

It was dry, and about -2 degrees. About 2miles from my house, the temp needle went into the red for the first time ever, light on, so i quickly pulled over and turned it off to let it cool. I opened the bonnet, everything seemed fine, water in the rad at least but it was very hot and smelled bad! Nursed it to my mates, took his car instead.

I should also note that the blowers were blowing stone cold, no heat in them at all, and at one point the car cut out, i put it in 2nd and released the clutch and it came back to life.

I KNOW not hot air from the vents is a sign of a humped head gasket, but there was no mayo on the filler cap, no water leaking from anywhere and the water in rad was just the level it should be.

My guess is a dodgy thermostat (i hope). What would you say? Anything i can check/rule out etc?

if the thermostat was jammed shut your heater would still be roasting and rad would be freezing

with head gasket gone cylinder pressure can still leak into water system causing it to air lock etc and you will not always find mayo just depends where the gasket goes and what leaks into whereever

have also seen in really cold weather if there is not much antifreeze it is possible that the radiator can freeze inside causing the engine to overheat

Tits.

So you rekon it could be the head gasket? Anythin else make it overheat?

The windows were iced up, so i had the car running with the heaters on to de mist it, but they were constantly stone cold, no heat at all came through them.

It's also possible the water pump impellor could have fallen/corroded/broken off inside the engine, meaning no circulation. Heaters will blow cold but engine will get VERY hot.

i would start off by checking the antifreeze content as if it freezes it obviously wont circulate but the header tank will get hot as the water boils up and forces its way back up to it

2nd check the thermostat and water pump as if the stat is jammed or pump knackered it wont circulate enough water to cool it

Never thought of that, im just up the road from you so you'll know its fucking bitter tonight, -2/3 earlier. Ill check that out in the morning.

Could it be airlocked? Would flushing out the system and re filling it be worthwhile?

my pals 328i did this last week, i told him to top it up and bleed it, its been fine ever since, turn engine off, loosen bleed screw, top up with coolant/water till water with no air bubbles is coming out, tighten screw put cap back on, try that

On these cars almost every week we see the water pump breaks but still turns from the outside making it look fine but the blades break off inside..Also the fan clutch fails but if its freezing its not likley to be the fan clutch..

I think it is the water pump mate.

BMW apparently issued a revised pump with brass blades rather than plastic ones it came with originally? Apparently mine has the revised one but i rekon its still the problem.

Will phone down to fairbairns on monday morning for a price, Arnies discount normally only brings it down to a sensible price though!! Often wonder if its worth paying extra for OEM or if saving a bit on a pattern part is just as good!
