Default Private plate question which is irritating me

im selling me old e36. Not advertised it once but the neighbour is interested, which is handy.

It has a private plate i want to keep T15 *** but the car was originally registered with this plate and it does not have any other plate?
what will happen and what on plate will go on it?

im confused, its not like it had T657GHF but then i changed it to T15*** we registered the car when we bought it brand new with this private plate?

ARGH

80 to take off and 80 to put on, that is all i have done, although a straight transfer shud be cheaper

You need to get it onto retention before you sell it, otherwise it gets messy.

It just gets a new plate which is relevent to where the plate is taken of, ie if it was done in our local 1 it will go on a local plate like nx54 etc

He will need to insure it on it's current number to use it, you have to send off the v.5 , mot etc to apply for retention. (but NOT the disc, that's returned when the new one arrives)

DVLA will issue a new number and return the v.5 and supply a tax disc with the new reg on, then the new owner will have to change the number on his insurance and possibly have to pay a fee to do it.

Everything you need to know is here, you can even download the forms to fill in to take/post to your dvla local office
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...tes/DG_4022576

the best way to do it i can think of as he's a neighbour and should be trustworthy is sell him the car as normal, when he gets the log book back in his name use the form on the above link (form v778/1) to put the number on retention and get him to put you down as the nominee (all explained on the form). it will cost Ł105, when he gets the certificate of retention back with you on it as the nominee he can simply give it to you and you can transfer the reg number to a car registered in your name.

why does that matter? the plate change will show on a HPI report, so anyone buying the car should be responsible for checking things like this, its perfectly normal for cars to have had a plate change in their life!

Ollie6RS2 i did notice that, but knew someone else would point it out without a doubt!!!

We have had the 99 bmw in the family since new, i have owned since 05.

RIGHT back on topic, if the guy wants the car, do i let him buy it and have the log book and send it off, then get him to put the plate on retention for me?

theni can have it back?

He has a 530i

He is interested in buying a Bentley flying spur, Maserati quattroporte or an M5.
