Who gets a company car allowance, how does it work?

Been offered a new job as of yesterday, and there are a few things i need to consider, been given a not bad salary and £505 a month company car allowance.
Anyway my question is, how does this NORMALLY work, i appreciate it will differ slightly from company to company.
1)Would this include fuel, i.e if i get a £300 a month car i would use the rest to fuel it, or i would have to fuel it myself regardless of how much of the budget i used.
2) When could i use it, obviously it's a company car, or car allowance, so i take it that it's covered under their insurance? So does that mean i can't really use it for non company business, i.e trips to asda and weekends away camping and shit???
3) Would i be better off just saying, give me the equivalent money on my salary?????
Sure i'll think of more later....

who with rog? obviously onshore eh?
our work is £450/month. Basically its paid with your salary so you can do what you want with it. The terms are when purchased the car must be less that n 5 years old and it should have 4 doors. However one guy has an e46 m3 and another guy claims but has no car! Noone has batted an eyelid at either!!
Fuel is usually at your own cost unless for business use. You'll be able to claim miles back at prob 40p/mile.

Wud like a new fast car, but dunno if i can be assed with fuel costs and insurance, the punto does have it's advantages.....Lol.

Rog,
We get a car allowance. No real restrictions on what type of car ect but we do have to pay everything with it. I can claim my fuel back so i tend to use that for the servicing costs every 3-4 months.

I get 40p per mile for the first 18,000 miles then 20p after that.
Need to pay everything out of that including our own insurance but it still works out fairly well if you do your own servicing.
Only car they wouldn't let me buy was an EVO but a scooby was ok

I get £3500 a year car allowance on my band and get £0.13 per mile- which is gov't advised rates for a 2000cc car.
I have to have a car that is under 6 years old and have to pay for all running cost from that and have class 1 business use on my insurance.
