Default 1080p over 1080i HDTV

....people claim there aint much difference ...there is....playstation 3 in 1080p is unreal!!! ...the picture is even clearer....

...anyone else seen 1080p whats your thoughts?

...the thing that gets me is within a few years there is gonna be HDTV thats about 10 times better ....surely technology has to stop...as with mobile phones getting smaller now they getting bigger due to not being able to use the keys

1080 isnt 720 stretched, if the native resolution of the data is 1080 then its 1080.

1080p is in effect twice the size of 720p, and if you have the tv to benefit it, then it will be mind blowing.

Boschman, do you have a true 1080p screen, as in the NATIVE resolution is 1080*xxxx, because a lot of screens upscale to make it better, but wont be better than a native 1080p. Oh make sure its a 1080p game as well, not just "supported"

HD READY << always makes me laugh - not for the poor consumers though who are only getting a lesser quality screen TRYING to be 1080i/p

Im gonna be getting a 1080p screen but a 50" and sitting 5-6ft from the screen so I will get the true benefit, because if u have a 42" or less and sit further than that away you wont see ANY difference over 720p (at most it will be marginal).

Of course its different... but you need a large screen to see the difference just like 640*480 was great on your 14" computer monitor but shat on your 19"

720p is plenty for your 32" screen but 1080p on a 50" is what u want

You've got what Phil

Flunk me, I was offered one of those at a stupid low price (still ridiculous) but seriously can't justify spending a extra Ł10 a day on the electric bill

had my panel since last yeat but could only try out 1080p once the PS3 was released. You get used to it very quickley, IMO 720p would be fine.

with my mac connected in 1080 you cant really see anything unless you are the same distance that you would be from a normal monitor.

Ok so yes 1080 progressive always going to better than bog-standard PAL........but the difference you'll see in TV use is going to massively compromised by the compression used on the data! Grggg!!!!

can someone please tell me what the best HD TV to go for is if its not going to be used for HD signal at the mo

will just be being used with standard sky

was just gonna buy the best a 1080p but been told it would make sky look worse than if it was on a lesser quality screen

been looking at these 2

768 pixels

Phil, Have you not tried a 1080p Blu Ray movie disc yet as that should show serious some difference on a 70" TV.

Cawood, from your other thread and based on your budget (Ł1500iirc) I would go for a 1080p TV. That Samsung 50" LCD you put the link to on here looks great and I am sure it will be fine at Sky SD. If this is your first LCD TV then the colour range will impress you more than the screen res of 1080i/p.

If you have no interest in Blu Ray or HD DVD, save yourself some money and buy a good 1080i set as that is the maximum res Sky HD will broadcast in for many years to come.

For the actual difference between 1080i and 1080p look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i

To compare 1080i and 1080p, it is important to compare framerates. Due to interlacing, 1080i has twice the frame-rate but half the resolution of a 1080p signal using the same bandwidth, although, also due to interlacing, 1080i looks to be the same resolution, although with more flicker. Faster frame-rates are especially useful in sports shows and other shows with fast-moving action. However, on some flat screens that do not support interlacing, this instead becomes smeared or jarred artifacts
p will be better than i everytime given the same broadcast signal - more so if it is actually broadcast HD.

So you are saying that ieven though sky HD is broadcast native in 1080i it will look better when its converted by the TV up to 1080p?
