Project RingPug begins!!
Well.. trackpug anyway! not the Miami blue that I wanted but picked it up for £500 , so can't complain! Pretty much std 1.9 GTi.. 5 new tyres on decent 1.9 alloys are worth nearly half that so can't really go wrong
Let the cheap, fun track action begin!!!
P.S. I need a bigger garage

It's going to kick Martins (dumped) Integras arse
Doesn't really seem much faster than my last 1.6 GTi, originally I put that down the the longer ratio box of the 1.9 but then it does 3k at 70mph
Time for a serious weight loss plan Just like Vanessa Feltz

Chop, have a look on eBay and the Autotrader.. thats about all the searching I did!!!
Less what are the plans for yours??
Mine is going to be stripped out, caged, polybushed, uprated suspension and will change the brake pads+fluids.. Should be ok then I think! Maybe some cut slicks as well..

If i can find the engine cheap - and have the contacts I'm thinking a BMW compact with m3 engine might be my weapon of choice Tegs seem way over priced for what you get.

Chop, you are bloody miles away! Just look around for one, the newer the better (get a 90- one and they have better back lights and front bumper) and just check the usuals!! I'll have a proper chat with you about it at some point if you want with what to check..
Newts.. I don't have a chance against Martin's Metro (neither do many Cossie's in its new guise) or Seans Beemer for that matter
Can still have almost as much fun though!

What suspension is best for track? I'm thinking tarmac spec bilsteins (what poundage springs?) roller top mounts and rose jointed bottom arms?? Then just billy dampers and lowered rear torsion bar for the back end???
Sound about right?

Phil
I've got Tarmac Bilsteins up front (will check the spring rate), as you would expect they are hard but it handles well on them.
Got some spax on the back but am fitting shorted adjustable AVO's to take account of the fact my beam is lowered one spline.
My beam is from a 309GTI which as widder track Good mod if you are tracking it.
For that matter you can 309 front wishbones and shafts to give you some camber, maybe a cheaper option than the adjustable arms?
Maybe look at udrating your rear beam mounts as these will be knackered if its still running originals. Pug sport do some solid mounts. Engine mounts could also do with up graded. Not a plug but if you want a very stiff lower engine mount let me know as I sell them
Spent all last winter and this summer sorting mine, started with a bare shell. New parts nearly everywhere. I've got an Mi16 on throttle bodies, it goes well even after weeks of probs with it
Brake upgrades, I've got Alcon 4pots which a brillant. Bought them second hand so weren't as dear as new. If you want I can give you the contact details of somebody thats sells 206GTI 180 brakes. They are a straight onto 1.9 hubs, my brother has some fitted, haven't faded on him even after serious track use (standard pads )
You are right about the roller top mounts and adjustable bottom arms, they are a good choice. I plan to fit some over the winter.
My user name is the same on there as on here so send me a pM if you want a mount.

Good advice mate
It's so cool having another car you can just bolt upgrades onto.. nothings ever simple on the mk1 Escort (everything requires grinding, welding or just plain doesn't fit )
Will definitely chat in the near future and i'll have a lower engine mount off you then as well.. it's on its way out anyway as the car is a bit jerky on pull off!! (not as bad as my last one though that was completely shot )
Thanks again

Phil,
For some inspiration, check out my brother's website:
www.jamesnathan-motorsport.co.uk
You'd be surprised just how well they can go round corners in full tarmac spec

My mounts have been adapted from Merc truck, they are solid rubber with a seperate metal stiffener. Consiedrable stiffer than the XM ones.
Good if you are running a high spec engine or don't want you mi16 down pipe hitting the bulkhead.

mi16 is a 1.9, same as a normal 205 1.9 gti chop! I think (may be wrong on this..) but the 2.0 mi16 engine has a heavier steel block.. or less power?? Something like that.. Not something i've looked into really, going to sort the handling on mine and worry about power later - it doesn't mean a huge amount on track until you are well used to the car!

Mi16 is a 2.0 16V im sure? simmilar in performance to the GTI-6 if i remember rightly, ive been out in mates Mi16 205 a few times, was pretty swift and also mates old 306 XSI with GTI-6 engine, 5 speed box, still same top end tho, 6th gear must of been an economy job
theirs a Mi-16 CTI original Dimma for sale on www.strathycruise.co.uk red, leather etc, no use for track right nuff

I had a Gp A spec 1.9 rallycar, many many mods as you would imagine.
Roller bearing top mounts but with the extra strengthened top plates welded in, rose jointed gear linkage (good tip as the plastic bushed ones will break), Bilsteins all round (bit too hard on the back), rose jointed bottom arms, 309 beam with solid bushes (made 'em myself £3 each), solid engine mounts (homemade) etc etc.
Was a fun little car the only thing that lets them down is the electrics.
Im sure you will have fun with it Phil

No the standard 1.9gti is 130BHP.
The 1.9mi16 16valve engine (alloy block) found in 405mi's and BX16V's are 160BHP. Makes for a quick 205 and lots of tunning potential!
The 2.0Mi16 (found in late 405's) is cast iron a bit less powerful than the Mi16, something like 150BHP.
Then theres the late 2.016V found in the GTI 6 and otheres, still Iron but more powerful, 167BHP with Cat.
