Having the red key is irrelevant, it makes no difference to the black key!!
Just go into FORD's they can tell the number(of the key) just by looking at it as there is a sequence, then they will supply one BUT it will NOT work with the immobiliser as it is not programmed(by the red key)
Ford can also supply and programme a red key, and delete all the lost keys.
I had 1 X red, 1 X black key supplied programmed, old ones deleted etc for Ł64, shop around a lot as the price varies a lot, most expensive quotes for me were over Ł130.
I ALL you want is a key to get in, then any key cutter can do them.

get a normal mk4 escort key from fords and get em to cut it
there only 4 quid and most wont charge to cut the keys too
reading the keys is piss easy too aslong as you know what your looking at
theres 6 cuts and theres only 4 different gauges of cuts
btw EVERYTHING tabetha said was spot on

What I did ages ago on a escort I got with 1 key (black ) was to go to fords andget 2 cut, then hacksawed off the stem of the original key I got with car and taped the top into the ignition cowling so it de-activated the immobiliser.....then hid a kill switch in the fog light switch (it didnt have fogs...got a switch from scrappy)
sorted for 9 quid

yes mate untill you loose your keys.... then it costs you hundreds to get programmed and new lockset.
This way you eliminate the risk of loosing the only immobiliser key you have.

well the ecu needs an immobiliser signal to let you start the car....
So changing the lock set and trying to use a different key that your ecu wouldnt recognise isnt a good idea.....
HOWEVER you can do this by doing what I said and cutting the stem off of your old key and put it in the ignition cowling...then use the other lock set as normal.

sometimes the keys can be hard to read if there worn badly, as said you don't need the red key to cut another key, you only need the red key to program the new key if you want it to start the car, if you only want it to open the door then a non-chipped key would be fine.
the ford finnis number for the standard key is, 6494853 Ł3.71 +vat.
cutting is normally about Ł5.
a nomal locksmith/hardware store would be a bit cheaper.
