Default Are we alone in the universe?

So, humans are the only form of "higher life" in the tiny universe?

The smaller planets (inc earth)..

Compared to the larger planets.

Nowt amazing, we all know how tiny our planet is. Especially compared to our sun.

But how big is our sun compared to the other suns in our milky way?

Not very........

But then wait, if Jupiter is only 1 pixel large, yet dwarfs our planet, surly nothing can get bigger?

Wrong...

The largest star from the above picture is the 4th smallest star in the next image......

We are nothing, we are tiny. Will the human race survive long enough to get to any of these? Will the technology ever exist? Who knows, not in our lifetimes. Makes you think though..

Just the sheer scale of it poses important philosophical questions and opens up the whole concept of alternative universes.

Who knows, somewhere, millions of light years away, there may be a planet on which Ford still do well at TOTB

I'm sure it does exist, or we are at least on the way to it. Only problem is it's probably buried way under Area 51 or the like, and not to be seen in our lifetimes. Nazi scientists were developing "UFO's" during the 40's, god knows what can be done now.

I dont agree with you at all, to visit places millions of light years away would take an absolutely gargantuan breakthrough in technology and I dont believe that we are anywhere even close to it.

And that is if its even possible at all, which its perfectly probably it simply isnt!

the major problem is getting from one solar system to another or galaxy

even at the speed of light it will take 90 years to get to the next solor system

Im not sure I agree with the concept of it being "infinate", certainly not in terms of the numbers of planets and stars etc, its a big fucking number no doubt, but im not sure its infinate.

I've no doubt there are other beings around.

Not necessarily any further advanced than us though, so not surprising we've never met.

And if someone does get clever enough to get here, they are probably clever enough to know not to interfere as they know it would screw everything right up

considering 1 lightyear is the distance a particle of light can travel in 1 earth year, and light travels at approximately 3*10^8 m/s (1,079,252,848.8 km/h or 670 616 629M/H )

so thats 6.7*10^8 MPH

there are 8765.81277 hours in 1 year

therefore 670,616,629 * 8 765.81277 = distance traveled = 5.9*10^12 miles... and thats only 1 lightyear... far too big to even consider thinking about...

I saw these a while ago, and am very interested in it all (Space/galaxies etc)

On the other end of the scale we have the smallest things in the known world....

It's stupid trying to think about it.. for me anyway, my brain starts to hurt!

There's so much out there, and yet most people know nothing about it! Imagine if there are other life forms... you can't think up what they look like.

Maybe somewhere there's an exact replica of everyone on earth, and they replicate every move we make... or the other way around we're being controlled

there are several theories, the current preferred one is that the universe is one big sphere that you just go round and round in... but the human mind cannot cope with the idea of infinite... we have never needed to so its hard to come up with a realistic theory of the universe...

Just to throw something else into the equation......

Given the sheer enormity of what is out there, and that the bible chats about earth as if its important and that god specifically made it for us and made us etc, does it seems like pretty conclusive proof to people that the whole concept of god is a load of old bollocks?

cause in my mind, if he was making the earth for us, what is then the point in going on to make a universe that is literally millions upon millions of times bigger than we can ever possibly go to?

look! WE are the Pinicle of his creation! all the others were attempts at making the BEST he could... and we are the BEST! he left it there for us to see how many times he tried to create us! and for us to se ewe are the best...

I love stuff like this. Get's you really thinking. It just goes to show though that for everything we find out scientifically which makes us seem rally intelligent, there are other things that we will never find out which makes us appear completely insignificant

I dont know enough about american politics to know to what extent the religious nuts have managed to restrict space exploration so I cant comment on that.

But to me the more we learn about ourselves, the universe etc, the more it points to the fact that the bible is absolute horseshit in all the details of such things.

I find the whole concept of God a peculiar one, I would like it to be true, but it just doesnt seem to have ANY basis that makes sense, and all religions get round this "minor issue" by just saying "you have to have faith, you dont need any evidence and you must not think about it for yourself"

what we need to invent is a type of multiverse re-traction.. kind of black hole theory with an actual out come insted of death. if we could just control how we did things... which will never happen in our human race lifetime.... we could in theory go to any part of any given multiverse at any time... i mean lets face it, we have allready invented a type of time travel... see new scientist mag for that one lol.. as far as being an "adavanced" race.. all we really know how to do is SURVIVE

well, not quite

apparently, the last measurement of the universe was along the lines of it being at least 10x83 light years across

now, if you consider that light travels 186,000 miles a second
then you multiply that by the amount of seconds in a year to give you the distance traveld by light in one year, putting another 83 zero's behind it tends to give you a bit of a headache (the answer is 31,536,000 seconds, but the calculater doesn't go any further than that so the computer says 5,865,696,000,000 miles so it's a lot to start with before you put 83 zero's behind it )

but i also get a copy of the new scientist posted through the letterbox every week so perhaps some of the info in there is sinking in
