a dry sump uses a very thin sump pan, the oil is then sucked out of this by a belt driven pump and pumped into a container elsewhere.

the oil is then sucked through the normal oil pump and around the engine, where it will again drain back into the sump and pumped into the container

so in effect, there is no mass of oil in the sump, its all stored seperatly.

reasons for this are to avoid oil surge/starving the engine of oil on race cars, or for space issues.

do a search for 'dry sump' on google, it should make you understand a bit better.

3 other benefits

allows much larger oil capacities due to remote storage tank - 2 gallons being the norm - good if the engine breathes heavily, endurance racing. Also helps reduce oil temps

a shallow sump also allows the engine to be sat lower in the car helping reduce CoG to help lower roll centres and CoG

less oil drag on the crank as it doesn't have to spin through a big puddle of oil like in a wet sump - ie reduction in parasitic loses.

Downsides being expense and extra weight in all the additional plumbing / tanks / pumps etc.

T38 BD14 spec cossi lump (aiming for 450)
Car will be stripped - no screen etc, if it doesnt need it for SVA or MOT its not having it.

Speak english boys

Although laymans terms would be better for me ...

I believe my pump is a four stage :

The extra will scavange the turbo and oil drain from the YBP separator. The separator has had the valve moded to seal on vacum but open under pressure. I have tee'd the turbo return with the separator as I was told it was possible to 'over scavange' the turbo ?

Whats the 2 stage pressure and inlets all about ?

Any of you got a good design for the crank sensor mount ? I have moved the timing lugs to a more suitable position :

Cheers,

WD

so when does the need to replace the oil pump (ie remove it) and use the dry sump to pump and scavange,

do oyu only do this when you exced the engine revs capacity of the standard pump, or for more flow???

has any body removed the standard pump and gone for this set up?

What size oil tank would you need for a 2.0 race engine?

If the tank was in the boot would that be bad? or does it have to be in the engine bay?

Pace say the closer the better but I cant really see how that makes much difference, maybe the pump just has to work a bit harder ?

I have the second (of four) pace tank sizes, cant remember it's size in L but it looks to be a bit smaller than broms
