Yes a chair can cause pain in your back to the way you are sitting!
Your chair should be adjustable to suit you to sit comfy in front of your desk etc

Your bum should also sit higher then your legs allowing you to have a straight posture (sp)!!

Take Recaro seats for an example, you'll find that your legs always sit higher then your botty, well in face it should always be the other way round. So Recaro's actually give you a slouching posture!

Does that make sense?

Yes it can cause back acke, try and sit properly, don't slouch over leaning towards a screen, or slouch down.

I used to visit a Chyropractor and had certain excersises I had to do between visits, basically if you do those regularly you should able to ease the pain.

If you do vist a chyropractor, DONT wear loose fitting boxershort, nothing worse than you old boy and his pals hanging out all over the shop while some bloke bends you in two

Yes, a decent adjustable chair can make a difference. It took nearly 4 months to find one that suited ME (the mupwits were trying to fob me off with 'executive' office seating, contrary to what was asked of them - supplier sent me a new salesman who had a bad back himself, and supplied me with samples much more suitable).

Try to adjust the chair you have first, as per these guidelines.

what focusbird said, you should have an assesment, and your employer should act on it,if not, go speak to your union rep (you have joined a union, right?)

obviously in most places, everyone ignores the assesments and takes the piss out of the people doing them, but if you actually have an issue then they're quite handy

Having been a DSE assessor for years I can tell you that over 30% of office chairs on the market do not comply with the regulations.

If a firm ignores the recommendations of a properly carried out assessment the penalties under the new European DSE legislation are considerable.

Thanks for putting this thread out because i've now fixed my chair

For AGES i've had very sore legs at the back of my thighs. I thought i'd look at the seat option and realised i could tilt the base forward and now the pressure is off my legs.

Why the FUCK didnt i look before?
