Default Cometic Gaskets

How long does a cometic HG normally last?
Engine is Stg3 and used everyday but never hammered.
Just found some sludge in the header tank ( and NO water ) and there's been a misfire on startup for ages but it clears after about a minute.
Got recipts for a top end rebuild by PJ Motorsport 6K ago and it's tappety as fook already

PJ fitted it, and they were the last people to do any work on the car before I bought it (so th e previous owner told me and i've got proof of that). I've since had to redo the cam cover gasket as the cometic one had been torqued down and was pissing oil all over the cam belt, sorted that, took it to Stu for a set up and a bolt fell out of the exhaust pulley while stu was driving it

right ok they are normaly good the cometic gasket but you have to have the head skimed and the block has to be flat other wise they will leak

I have two separate experiences......

First one was okay - lasted as long as it took for me to break other parts of the engine (say about 15k)

Second one not so good. As has been stated a lot - they are good when both the head and the block are in perfect condition. If not, forget it.

To put this in scale, there was only one incredibly minor perfection on my cylinder head adjacent to the water jacket on the exhaust side. Whilst I cannot confirm until I get the head off, it is my opinion that this minor imperfection has led to my gasket failure. I will confirm when I take it to pieces tomorrow!

Cheers matey

Spot on in my experience.

Have used 5 of them in five years of Cossie ownership, at varying power levels, all use was ABUSE. Never had one fail. I've easily done 40000 miles in my car, many on track or at full boost

Recommended as far as I'm concerned, just make sure they're well fitted!

Well there's no record of the block being decked so I'll presume its not 100% flat (blocks never been out of the bay and its on 107k) its only had 2 HG's in its life as far as I can see, so i'll put a t25 escos gasket on it and see how that goes.

i can vouvh for the headwork and gaskets etc being fitted by pj as i took si up to collect the car.

i know the bill wasnt cheap also and the head was fully sorted, so it seems odd to me that the gasket has gone already?

when my engine first built on cometic gasket i was getting a slight leak on drivers side(head skimmed),then the engine fucked up anyway so bought another and have had no bother so far, although only 2k but make sure torque settings are correct as when first done we took rocker off after 100miles and needed redone ever so slightly dont know if down to wrench or not

Dan@FastFord
The HG may not have gone already, I'm just infected with cossie paranioa!
I wanna know where all the water went though, cant find any leaks, went all over it with a torch in the dark last night. Thinking on, the sludge in the tank could be from the last time it went.
I just want my car to work properly
