Default E36 3.0 M3, missfire at idle

ok ive got a little bit of a miss at idle, which is annoying me

recently had an inspection 2 service, so i'm guessing something gone out of kilter shortly after that? dodgy plug? connection not seated correctly?

so few Qs,

1) where the fuck are the spark plugs
2) what kind of ignition system's it got? dizzy? coilpack? individual coils?

at the smallest sniff of throttle it purrs like a kitten, so i'm guessing that the miss is nothing to worry about?

Plugs are under the cover and it uses individual coil packs that sit on top. Check for a small air leak or idle control valve may need a clean aswell.

Coil packs period can be an issue.

You say you have just had an inspection II done - IIRC this has new plugs installled as standard. It may be that the unplugging of the coil pack and replugging may have caused and *issue*.

Have you been back to the garage that did the work?

A decent BM specailist firm will be able to plug it in for you to find out.

they all have a little cough at idle especially when hot in traffic nothimg to worry about but change the plugs if you must take off the m power plate (4 x 5mm allen bolts) then remove the coils 2x 10mm nuts per coil and change plugs the coils do not have to go back in the same place whilst the coils are out check the lower boots on them as they go brittle and crack causing arcing in the plug hole they are about£10-£15 from bmw I changed all 6 on my 3 litre just cos i could, hope this helps mate ( btw I am a bmw technician and owned a 3 litre m3 for 2 and a half years)

How many people jumping on the doom wagon It's an erratic idle, common as fuck on all M cars across the range. 100% guarantee it's icv, air leak or something equally as easy to fix. My 3.0 M3 had a blippy idle, quick clean and it was sorted. It will still go to the ring and back regardless. This is NOT a Ford, although IMA owned it once, so might be in the same league

Have they gapped your plugs properly? Some say they do come pre-gapped but with the way things go I'd chuck the plugs and get some more and gap them properly, I know I haven't got the 3litre in mine and its not E36 either but when i did service my E30 325i I thought the plugs came gapped but how wrong was I! Gapped them properly and it runs a dream!

Maybe completely off with this but it maybe something to try!
