Default Differences in 1.8 TD engines?

As some of you may remember, I blew the engine in my 1.8 TD Mondeo on Friday night

Anyway planned to buy a 1.8 TD Escort scrap to swap engines but engine was more fucked than the bloke thought so gave it a miss

Anyway over at auctions last night, ended up coming away with 3 cars one of them being a 1.8 TD Mondeo, MK1 on the M plate. sound engine, fully serviced etc...

Collected this morning on way home, its alot more sluggish than the one that was in my MK2 Mondeo and sounds alot different too...

Was there a change in the Turbo Diesel engine between MK1 & MK2 Mondeos?

As a point the LogBooks also suggest differences...

R***SWG Ford Mondeo LX TD

compared to

M***STV Ford Mondeo GLX D Turbo

Both still 1753cc too, but like I said the MK1 is more sluggish and also sounds alot different to what my MK2 did...

Just wondering what differences if any?

Have decided not to do the swap anyway as tbh this M plater is in quite good nick, just needs replacement front bumper and wing mirrors really....

MoT until June too .... and Tax...

£70 (inc Buyers premium from auction 2!!)

Bargain runabout IMO, decent exhaust and 4 decent tyres too, just needs a new wheel trim as one missing, although will probs put my MK2s Si alloys on anyway seeing as the MK2 will be going scrap

I know on the later engines Ford lowered the compression as people were blowing the engines due to the turbo.

Didn't the older ones have a slightly bigger turbo?
I'm sure I read that somewhere but could be wrong?

the 1.8 td engines with top mount intercooler had garret t2 turbo's.
Not sure about the later Endura engines. As far as i know the endura engines had different heads, could be wrong tho.
when it comes to the N/a 1.8d engines i always found the NON Endura engines to be strongest and less smokey.
i've had a few 1.8d fords, and Every one of them, has driven different and sounded differnt. Whilst being the same engine's.
i find the ones that sound dog rough are the best, funnily enough

The M reg one does sound alot more solid like....

But the old R reg one was a fair bit more sprightly (if you can call a diesel mondeo that at all ) in the acceleration department, and that engine was the complete definition of ROUGH

why dont you swap the turbo & intercooler off the fucked engine and put it on your new engine,
i'm not sure if it possible, but couldnt a bleed valve be fitted to wind the boost up a little?

you will also need to increase the fuel pressure if your upping the boost and going for more power
