Canon 55-200mm F4.5/5.6 11 USM

I know they arent exactly pro lenses but will they be ok for a newbie like myself?

Does anyone use a monopod? I fancy one of those and seem far better an idea than lugging about a tripod!
I would choose the 75-300 F4-5.6 III USM (USM version VERY important).

The 55-200 is not a very nice lens to use..

Is it any good though? Can you recommend anything similar for me? Something like 55-200, 70-300, 28-200 etc. Budget Up to £300 if necessary but was looking at the above for £150. Or is the above lens suitable enough for a newbie?
The 75-300 really aint that bad at the price paid for it, but of course you get more if you pay more. But used in good light and stopped down it works ok and is a good place to start. So it's actually down to use, the money you want to spend and the kind of quality you expect. So it is a good lens for a beginner that wants to learn and photograph, but for taking pctures that will be used in big posters and such it is just not sharp enough. It should be possible to get a 70-200mm F/4 L USM used in good condition for sensible money and i really would reccomend that lens instead if you are serious about photography as you will crave the extra quality later on anyway.
Hope i didn't put you off anything.
But whatever you do don't buy the 55-200..

last Q on lenses (i hope!)

Today i bought my camera at last Got a free canon bag thrown in at Jessops so that was a wee billy bonus. Ordered a memory card online also.

Anyways in jessops i was offered a sigma and a Tamron 28-300mm lens. They had no Sigma in stock but he said i could have the Tamron. Both apparently much and such the same. Tamron is £60 more in the shop but through price matching other places i can get sigma at £170 and Tamron at £195.

SO are either of these 2 any good? Guy in camera shop said they'd do me just fine!

Or do i stick with the Canon 75-300 for £175?

Ok here's the lens i was offered today
Tamron SP AF28-300/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro

I just found this excellent review and as it happens it was matched off against the Canon 75-300mm F4-5.6 IS which i believe is one step better than the Canon 75-300mm F4-5.6 111 USM i mentioned above.

The Tamron does excellent against the Canon IS and is pretty similar at certain points.

So i guess this means i'm better off with the Tamron 28-300mm than the Canon 75-300mm F4-5.6 111 USM.

Christian would this be a fair assumption?

I'm basing it all on this review:

EXCELLENT! I need a review from someone who has actually used one! I think it looks a great lens for a newbie! Seems to be slightly more expensive than the similar Sigma and i guess that we can presume more cost=better?!?

LOL@sticking out a mile! I did notice it looked huge when extended

It's one to impress the ladies with

Although mine is probably a Mk1 not a MkIII. It is an ok lens, although the autofocus on mine can be kinda hit and miss so sometimes I have to do it manually!

Chopper - I also have a 70-300 IS F4 in my attic somewhere aswell (I brought these lenses way back in the day with my first DSLR). The only advantage it has over the Tamron is the image stabiliser. From memory, the Tamron lens is a bit noisey when using auto focus however your not taking pictures of wildlife so no worries there. Only other thing I didnt like about the 70-300 IS was the fact that the wildest aperture was f4 + auto focus was very lazy, but then the price does reflect.

Just ot my lens infront of me, it says, Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III USM

Complete with loads of chips out of the end glass But definitely no IS

In that article above they are comparing it with the Canon 75-300 IS from the sample pictures, and the canon does seem better to me.

Yes i will, the Tamron is to much of a compromise in my book and as it was originally made as a lens for normal film back in the days it's start at 28mm which equals 45mm on a 350D.

If you want an allround lens you should check out the new Tamron 18-250mm lens. But as you allready have the 18-55 and if you want a cheap but still good tele zoom you should check out Tamrons 70-300mm
in Norway we sell these atm for £85 it's a good lens for the money.
Autofocus is not as good as Canon lenses but the optics are more or less the same..

i would really like this camera (D80) i am however still torn between the D50 because of price. It basically means i can get a better lens, which from what i've read, is what its all about really if you have a decent body.

Get some photos up then chop or what you've bought.

Very good choice, more or less the same picture quality as a Nikon D200 but not the sturdy build quality. Better buildt than the Canon EOS 350/400D models.

The Nikon D50 is still a very good camera and probably the one in the lower price range with the best exposure. Yes Nikon D40 is the replacement BUT be aware that it requires lense with buildt in focus motor..that means Nikkor AF-S lenses.. so you cannot choose the lenses that you want no Tamrons can be used IF you want to use autofocus, so the D50 is the camera to get imho and probably at a very good price aswell.

the D40 is nothing like the D50, if you want a near enough replacement to the D50 you have to buy the D80. if your after a decent dslr then please dont even look at the D40 it is only just above the bridge cameras. in my opinion the D200 is the best for value for money, nikon wise. i dont want to go into too much detail but D40 has no raw mode, D200 has 5 frames per second and magnesium weatherproof body( d80 has plastic body and 3fps ) . when looking for lenses you should be aiming for the fastest around , F2.8 is quite fast , once you start getting into F5.6 or above it starts to get pretty slow (my sigma 50-500 is f6.3 and with my x2 convertor attached it makes it F13, you need huge amounts of light to make it work properly) if your using a tripod then IS and VR doesnt account for anything, cheers nomad

Martin, what do you recomend i get for the Safari?

Having never been on one i have zero idea how close we are likely to be taken to decent photographic opportunities.

I am guessing i want to be saving for a 400mm F2.8 and 2x convertor?

LOL./ No mate. I plan to do a Safari in Kenya later this year and do not wish to miss out on any amazing photographic opportunities.

What lens would you suggest for such a trip?

The 400mm F/2.8 is one kickass lens, but also an expensive one..
You already have a very nice lens in the 70-200 F/4, i would stick with it and maybe get the 2x converter on an aps-c sensor canon it will equal 640mm F/8 but as you are in Kenya light should be no problem and you can also upp the ISO if needed. But if you are keen on spending even more money and also get even more zoom there is always the 100-400mm L USM IS and a converter and here there is a possibility for equal 1280mm for a relatively fair price.
BUT we should not forget the 300mm F/4 L USM IS this is a very nice lens with excellent picturequality and with a converter also here we can have up to equal 960mm.

So the choice is up the wallet... but you allready have a very nice lens..don't forget that

LOL./ No mate. I plan to do a Safari in Kenya later this year and do not wish to miss out on any amazing photographic opportunities.

What lens would you suggest for such a trip?
The 400mm F/2.8 is one kickass lens, but also an expensive one..

That's why I bought the 70-200 F2.8 IS USM, so that when I used the 2xconvertor I'd drop two F stops to F5.6, which is not too bad for the UK weather. I hope that's right?

The key is good quality lenses and then camera.
Not very good (read expensive) camera and cheap lenses.
