Looks like this thread was a result all round, lots of people with new cameras, or, at least an idea of what to get

Is there any interest in the basics of photography, rather than equipment choice ?

i.e. what is aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc... ?

If there is, I'll prepare a few primers that other experienced photographers can add to.

This won't make anyone a good photographer, but it should help you understand the different settings and how changing something affects the picture you are taking

I will try and look at it just the way stu does his tech articles, trying to relate the technical side to real world examples everyone can (should) understand.

Well I picked up my new camera and lenses on Saturday. Got a little carried away in the shop, and after two hours or so discussing cameras/lenses and other gadgets, I walked out of the shop Ł5026.93 lighter. I thought my credit card was going to melt in the machine. Other than the camera and lenses, I got a monopod, new bigger bag to carry everything, card reader, extra 8gig memory, extra battery, battery grip and so on. On the whole it was more expensive than buying on the internet, but the service and advice was good, and I walked away with all my gear that day. Also supporting my local shop

Some pictures of my kit taken with a crappy little digital camera.

Canon 5D body, fitted with 70-200mm f2,8L IS USM, hood and 2x converter. Extra battery grip fitted as well.

Canon 5D body, fitted with 28-70mm f2.8, hood and Speedlite 580EX flashgun.

Now just to try and use it. I would be very interested an article regarding aperture, depth of field, shutter speed, when to use zoom lenses and when to try and get closer etc.

Cheers
John

I’ve got one.

When using low F stops 2.8 the depth of field seems to be very narrow. So when taking a close up picture of something, IE like the tiger previously in this thread, one should use a high F stop maybe 5 or 5.6 to get all in focus. But to get the exposure correct, the shutter speed needs to be adjusted. This confuses me, when to use the correct F stop, and then adjust the shutter speed to suit, or even the other way round.

Cheers
John

You've got it... but... for a given F stop, the depth of field depends on two other factors, how close/far the subject is that you are photographing, the further it is, the greater the depth of field is, and, the lens you are using, at a given distance, a 50mm will have a lesser depth of field than a 200mm...
Thirdly, the size of the sensor in your camera will also affect depth of field.

However, you may also want to go for a creative effect, and only show its eyes in focus, and leave the rest blurred

I wish I had time to go into more detail, but I am afraid it's going to have to wait as I am a little busy with something called work at the moment

John, is this the 24-70 f2.8 or did u buy the 28-70 second hand? To my knowledge, the 28-70 has been replaced by the 24-70.
Both are very good lenses

Just bought a couple of tweaks for my camera Bag.

A Canon 2x VII Extender and a Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 DC Macro.

It has to be said that it would be financially rewarding for me to lock this topic now and never refer to it again!!

Mind you...
It wouldnt stop me spending half my online time over here would it?

Just checked, it's the 24-70mm f2.8 lens. Typo, too much information going on in my head at the moment. Information overload

Incidentally, i plan to go on a vantage point discovery trip at least one day this trip if anyone fancies it? We could lug all our gear in one or 2 cars and make an event of it perhaps?

Ive downloaded a great vantage point guide here:

Wish i could be there for that.

Here are a couple of pictures that i took yesterday. They originally came out a little dark because i didn't adjust the shutter speed, but i did what i could with them on photoshop, i'm pleased with the results, the depth of colour and lines on the car look good to me.

This car is a golf Rallye btw, numbers limited to 5000, maybe as many as 100 in the UK, 4x4 & supercharged

was very easy stu. download zip file and extract both .bmp and .ov2 files to desktop or wherever. then copy or transfer onto PDA

i put them in the germany map folder, and then they show up as Points of Interest that you can navigate to etc
