i havent been around motorsport lately but most of the cameras mentioned are pretty good. just remember that its the photographer that makes a picture, it doesnt matter how much you spend on your equipment it wont make you a better photographer, an eye for detail is worth at least a couple of F stops ,lol. in my opinion you need to also learn about composition, cheers nomad

Hi Martin, good to see you around mate. So what kit are you taking on Safari with you?

The safari plan is the 2nd good reason ive upgraded to a 30D. Lots of speed and better buffer for when i need to real in lots of shots as quickly as possible of the only animal weve seen in 4 days thats running away from us at 60mph.

I have a 20D but I agree with what everyone else says. Save up and get a good lense. I have two and they are both Canon "l" lenses however one is an f4 and the other is an f2.8. The latter is a 70-200 white lense and it blows my other lenseout of the water in every way. So much so I will stand further back to use it rather than use the shorter lense.

Good luck mate.

That sounds like it will be ideal for you Lamchop. great as a starter and then you can progress later. Buy this and get an "l" lense.

I would gurantee if Stu owns it then it will be immaculate.

Tamron make some nice lenses, but that doesn't mean all there lenses are good! Even Canon makes some real shit lenses.
The Tamron lenses on the e-bay ad are good value for money tho.

Before buying always check sites like www.fredmiranda.com/reviews or www.dpreview.comwhere u can find tests on most lenses.

@ people buying second hand / from e-bay:
beware: lenses and bodys are delecate equipment, if they have been dropped, they can be out of focus (front- or back focussing) this is something u won't notice at first sight, so check for this. Getting a out of focus lens fixed cost's quite a bit of money, so this is worth checking !

@ Stu:
Nice choice m8, excellent camera the 30d

haha sorry

Is the 300D the model before the 350 then? How do they compare? Wanna PM the details of what all you have? Lenses case etc.

Chop, if they get the right Tamron lens they are great!

Thats what the Tamron F2.8 will do

Although saying that I use my 18-55 Canon kit lens most of all especially for point and shoot stuff, as it is small light and cheap (already broke it once )

But then I take my 20d everywhere - it goes under the car in the garage with me, in the rucksack snowboarding and in handluggage everyother week when i'm on a plane

It still takes great pictures though

Here's two I took yesterday:

The wide angle of the 18-55 comes in useful for shots like this - another reason why I use it so much!

Had a look in a DSLR mag earlier and some of the tamron lens's go that cheap from Shops etc... can only presume they are the entry level ones.

Have you tried searching for the lens name and looking for reiews for them?

I'm going to go visit the camera shop and see each camera up close and have a look through menus etc etc.

The bug has bitten
Well the Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L is a MUCH MUCH better lens than the 70-300 in ALL aspects.. except price of course. BUT its comparable to the Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L in picturequality for half the price so you won't go wrong with this one.

Remember that you need to convert the lens mm to what it's comparable on a digital camera? Did you get that? Not sure how to explain properly.
But here goes:

If you use an 28-80mm wich is a normal lens on a regular film camera it will on a Canon EOS 300D, 350D, 400D, 10D, 20D and 30D hav the same angle of view as a 44,8mm-128mm, so you will loose the wide angle part of the lens, but you will gain more tele zoom. So always buy with a lens that goes from 18mm or so and up.

*gulp*
I'm not sure i'm ready for that expense on the lens
What do you use for longer distance motorsporty style stuff? Or is that the main lens you use for everything?

cbp
Aye i see that lens is expensive also!
yes i see what you mean about comparible size etc. I'd still have the standard kit 18-55mm lens as well.

I don't have any. I just hope and pray it never gets stolen as i wouldnt be able to replace it all for a long time. Added to the fact that I bought my Film camera with money my grandparents left me when they died and bought my 20D with money my mum left me when she died I hope they do never go missing as my cameras are more to me than they are to most I guess.

I want to get an EOS 1D mark 3 though now as they've got a 10fps motordrive

I have the NON IS version as i cannot yet justify £1k on lens alone due to my current lack of skill. However.. give me some more time....
