I'd rather get the 100 - 400 canon IS, which is what i'm getting next
A nice lens but slightly to big and heavy for normal travels..

My camera bag is massive anyway so it doesnt make that much difference Wish i'd never sold my Sigma 170-500 to be honest but I needed the money.

I have the NON IS version as i cannot yet justify Ł1k on lens alone due to my current lack of skill. However.. give me some more time....
The non IS version is also very smooth, have used it alot and really enjoyed it. So keep it and spend your money elsewhere than on the IS version..

No, because i really want to try the image stabiliser for handheld long shots when i am without tripod. Also, im interested to see how it works in mode 2 when panning for motorsport.

Youve chosen some excellent kit for your budget mate, and the pictures on your gallery prove beyond a doubt that photography is 70% skill and 30% kit.

Sell both lenses and get the 70-200mm F/4L USM IS

Have a nice trip to the ring and show us the results when you get back..
tip: try panning with slow shutterspeed... around 1/30 sec.. makes a nice effect,, but needs practise

@ Stu:
Maybe not really relevant as I live in Holland, but my kit is insured for € 5000,- and it costs me € 160,- /year insurance all risc.

My current kit:
Body:
Canon EOS 30d

Lenses:
Canon EF 24-70 F2.8 L
Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 L
Canon extender EF 1.4x II

Misc:
3x 1GB; 2x 512MB CF cards
HOYA polar filter
HOYA UV filters
Manfrotto monopod
Canon Bag

Currently saving up for a Speedlight 430 EX (and a ex.manifold with external wastegate for the cossie LOL)

Whats you're opinion on the 430 EX?

@cbp:
I have the 70-200 f2.8 and it's really worth the extra money over the f4 when u try to take pictures of rally cars in bad weather !!
Although the f4 is good enough most of the time.

@ Lambchop:
Let's say the tamron's are mid-range quality for low-range prices, so good value for money
Still, if you can stretch you're budget, the Canon EF 70-200 F4 L is the best value for money there is

This is a great thread, and I’ve learnt a lot since reading.

I’ve been wanting to upgrade from 35mm film to digital for some time now. The camera body I’m thinking of getting is the Canon 5D. I like the idea of the bigger CCD.

Lenses that I’ll probably get are the 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM and the 24-70mm f2.8L USM.

Any comments on the above?

Thanks
John

Cheers buddy

Have to agree, yes the kit will provide you with the technology to take brilliant pics, but that's less than half the job, it's down to the photographer to use it correctly and learn how to get the results

Takes time and patience, but it's a helluvalot of fun learning and these kind of threads are priceless

I have a Canon 5D, the full frame sensor and IQ is second to none! Highly recommended!

Has anyone seen the new 1ds MkIII, 10fps with image preview on DSLR! The ideal camera for action photography.

Yes I looked at the 1DS MKIII, but it's a bit out of my price range. I can't justify Ł4k just on a camera body for my hobby.

I work with 1D s MKII's, not knowing much about them as I'm a Nikon man, but the boss doesn'tseem to think there is any need to upgrade his kit. If you want to struggle to justify kit, his 600mm lens cost Ł5.5k or so lol

I might be keen to buy something silly like the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS if my dad's gonna go halfers!

Danja - long time no speak ol fella. Hope all is well? Your right, these L class lenses cost a mortgage and a half!

Chopper - nice to see you entering the photography domain. Stick with Canon or Nikon and you will not go wrong. Oh and get the 70-200 L, quality lens!

That's exactly what I want as the motordrive speed is perfect for the type of photo's I mainly take. You can pick up the body for Ł2999 which isnt that bad at all considering the mark II was that much not too long ago. And is still over 2 grand and they don't even make it anymore.

Baffling stuff

For a n00b to all this, what products would be a good start up package, but i fancy a dslr as from what i can gather they are at the better end of the scale.
Budget - Not mega, but then again i dont want Netto either

Can't comment on the 5D, but the lenses are probably one the best zoom lenses out there.
Let me know how they perform with the 5D..... might be worth saving for

See the start of this topic m8, some good recommendations from different people.
For a nice entry level DSLR, check the Canon 350d kit. The Nikon D40 is supposed to be a nice camera too (although I don't know much about Nikon)

Hi Stu

PM me a price if you wish but if someone comes to have a look then thats no prob

I went to Jessop's and am 99.9% sure i'll have the 350d

I had a look at the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS and its a nice piece of kit
Mate leant me his digitalSLR photography magazine and jessops are price matching so that lens can be had for Ł450 but thats a fucking lot of money

2 lenses i saw in the shop, Tamron 55-200mm F which can be had for Ł99.99 when bought with the camera.

Other 1 i liked was the Sigma 28-300 F3.5-6.3 for Ł229.99

I'm off to google them now!

I dont think i'm going to go for a zoom up to 300mm as dont think i'll need it. Looking through the magazine it tells you which lenses were used and more are 17-40mm or 18-55mm!

Can anyone recommend a decent camera bag for body+2 lenses that isnt too massive?

Bump.

I need help choosing the correct zoom lens to go with my impending purchase of a 350D!

Can anyone advise on either of these, Christian perhaps?!

Canon 75-300mm F4-5.6 111 USM

Canon 55-200mm F4.5/5.6 11 USM

I know they arent exactly pro lenses but will they be ok for a newbie like myself?

Does anyone use a monopod? I fancy one of those and seem far better an idea than lugging about a tripod!

Canon 55-200mm F4.5/5.6 11 USM

I know they arent exactly pro lenses but will they be ok for a newbie like myself?

Does anyone use a monopod? I fancy one of those and seem far better an idea than lugging about a tripod!
I would choose the 75-300 F4-5.6 III USM (USM version VERY important).

The 55-200 is not a very nice lens to use..

Is it any good though? Can you recommend anything similar for me? Something like 55-200, 70-300, 28-200 etc. Budget Up to Ł300 if necessary but was looking at the above for Ł150. Or is the above lens suitable enough for a newbie?

Gutted i was so busy today as i didnt get chance to do sod all with my new gear in teh sunshine, and it had all arrived by 10am.

I did manage to mess about with the dog in teh back garden at home though but it was getting dark. All seems to work well, i just need to get out to a decent location now and get some shots...

Heres a few random ones i took tonight.

Ive got all teh tools, now i just need the know how!
