yes.....it will spare your turbo a little longer. a dumpvalve will take the stress of the bearings from the turbo. ford had place them for a reason. but everyone says "throw it in the bin" blablabla. only because they want to hear the chatter because everybody does it. they say a dumpvalve is gay or something like that. well whats gay about a dumpvalve????

better be a gay and a turbo which lives longer then not.

cheers

Also sound is not important to me, more concerned about performance and reliability.

Put it this way

I run my car when it was Stage 1 with no dump valve or re-circulating valve. It was flashing 28psi and holding 23psi on a T3-so was having the bolloxs whipped out of it. 3000 mile of hard driving and boosting, took it off and it was fine

I thought the only way a dump valve could lose you power was if the spring inside wasn't strong enough for the level of boost you run ie. the piston or diaphragm will lift away from its seat and leak boost.

when the dump vale opens does it dump the all from the the whole system eg intercooler ? but if this is the case then how longdoes it take for the whole system to come back up to full pressure.

thats the only way you will loose power with a dumpvalve. buy a piston one with a good spring and nothing will go wrong.

and 3000miles without trouble is nothing. i drove more then 90000km without turbo trouble. i think you wont reach that without a dumpvalve when you are boosting 23psi or more.

cheers

So basically the car will be better without it (performance), but from a reliability point of view not as good but not bad enough to worry about. Is that right?

On Audi's and VW with turbos i believe the valve is called something that would translate to "noise reducer".
