Default Loud screaming turbos.

Dumpvalves, chatter, flamer kits, cone filters, anti-lag, screamer pipes, etc etc, they all mods that most people have just for the visual/aural effect as much as the performance (as TBH, most cars are used for FUN, and if the persons fun is improved by the above, fair play to em), so heres one, LOUD turbos...

What (barring Jim Gallabys old XR4x4 turbo mod of compressor wheels scrapeing on housings, lol ) things make turbos louder (on the inlet side).

Big boost and big open cone filters close to the inlet both make em noisyier, but most noticable it seems are ported shroud compressor inlets...

Im sure most peoples seen that old vid of the Black Supra street racing the Mustang and the supras turbo sounds like a fookin jet engine when spinning up (i cant remember where link is ), well thats what most/all ported shroud turbos sound like (providing they not got a silencer fitted to front like there is on some).

Heres another vid of a Supra running a ported shroud turbo, have a listen...
http://www.speedtoys.com/~daveh/Race/DaveH1056.wmv

Had a quick squiz around the net and seen a lot mentioning the huge noise they make, but dont know why, even found an old PM from someone off here that mentions it...

I run (as you may know) as GT Series Ball Bearing Turbo. I have had the Ported Shroud mod carried out recently. In sounds like an aeroplane turbine now, which is the tits
Also some quotes from another site-

turbo so damned loud that it sounds like a semi-truck on the freeway
Mopther of god, this thing is LOUD without the inlet silencer on it. On the freeway at 10" of vacuum it sounds like a semi truck, under boost it is like a 747. Anti-surge compressor housings rule!
Anyone know why they make such a row compared to turbos with conventional inlets?

ah i see could it not be that the air getting sucked in echos like a fooker in the surrounding bit of the housing, thats the only major difference i can see between the 2 so it must have something to do with that i presume. have you heard of these www.mjmturbos.com

I dont know MJM mate myself, but never liked the look of them, and a quick search brought this up...

These quotes are from DEALERS and 2 seperaste ones at that...

we used them in the begining, the last shipment we recieved of 25 turbos, 18 of them came back with faults, some without even having 1 mile on them
They are junk. If Udo sells you a BRAND new turbo, its might be ok, but I've never seen an actual new turbo come from his shop. I used to do a good bit of business with him, but I had to stop, because of so many failures.
I'm talking about some serious problems:

No boost at all
water in the engine
fully coked bearing housing causing oil seal to let loose and----> oil locked engine
compressor wheel shattering ------> Udo has most of his wheels and shafts made by a foundry in China. The quality IS definitely chinese
eggshell thin turbine flanges (been milled flat so many times) ---->broken/warp prone flanges
Seems like the piston ring oil seals in his turbos are good for about 10k miles at best, generally.
They look very unprofessional. For example, the wastegate actuator rods have old washers welded to the rod to go over the flapper shaft.
The "brackets" he makes for wastegate actuators look like my 1 year old niece got let loose with a stick welder.
I could go on.
There loads of good companies to deal with in the USA, just do some reasearch and you find the good ones and bad ones quite easily...
