Default How much are big ends and small ends for Cossies?*UPDATED*

Ive only gone and cattle trucked the engine, and my mechanic reckons this is the likely cause, praying to god that it aint damaged the pistons itself cause theyre Cosworth Racing ones and with saving for the hols to America I just cant at the minute fork out for new ones,Thats the worst case scenario anyway and I dont even wanna think about that till I hear back from the lad

If they are thicker ones (due to a regrind being needed) then they are a lot dearer. so you need to find out if they are std/std it needs still or not?

Do you mean big ends and little ends, or big ends and mains?

Little ends are where the rod meets the piston.

Ps

IMHO though, its likely the crank will need a grind if ANY of the bearings have gone, and possibly new rods too if its the big ends, so a price on just bearings isnt likely to be much use to you.

100 quid or so though for a total ballpark figure for a set of mains and big ends.

what does the mechanic say the problem is? or what are the symptoms?little end noise on YB's is very common...which means you need to strip the bottom end down anyway to replace them, and replace the mains/big ends whilst it's apart (be silly not too for the sake of Ł100)

Rods you are looking at about 80 quid secondhand, machining costs vary wildly from place to place but again its roughly in the 100 quid ballpark for griding all 9 journals on a crank.

When I did similar with my engine (spun a shell which is what seems to be a common failure on the YB) the total bill came to about 400 quid including a new oil pump, that was with no labour for the engien removal or the mechanical work though of course as I did that myself.

Slight noise when stood idling, then when you rev it to 2.5-3k it rattles its tits off,oil pressure is still up

TBH that could even be the head gasket gone or merely a loose spark plug.

I would start by compression testing it.

Steven... ring Northern Rebore theyre in Elswick Road Newcastle

0191 obviously 2734326

from what ive been quoted you'll be looking at around Ł35 for journals and same again for bigends. they'll also regrind the crank and lighten/balance it if you wish.

how does he know the crank is bent?

unless he has sent it to a machine shop?

My last crank i had ground was slightly bent and the machine shop ground it and said it would be ok, so i used it was fine putting out over 400 bhp and is still going strong now,

so might be worth getting it checked, if not send it to me and i'll get my place to check it?

Well you know the shells we gone so the only thing you werent expecting is the rod and the crank but if the crank turns out ok its just a rod which aint a probelm

he took it to the machinist , straight at either end ,but bent like a banana in the middle
Looking at it its gonna be cheaper to buy a standard engine, sell the head and put my pistons which are fine and my head with the BD12`s all back in,what doi you think Butch?
