Default Back in a cossie at last .....but!

Managed to get hold of a k plate saph off a mate, but it was cheap for a reason! he kept ripping the drivers side front drive shaft apart, which i have been told was probably down to the engine mounts. got hold of some collins uprated items but i need to know is it an engine out job or can it be moved enough in the bay to get access to them?

Also after the last driveshaft went he got a replacement off a trader who gave him the option of one with a split cv boot which was cheaper so he bought it - now i've done both cv boots on it and properly packed it out with cv grease but the bugger won't stop clicking, i take it it's gotta be bined?? (btw this isn't a dig at the trader, cos he bought it a while ago now knowing about the boot and he's never dissapointed with his service yet!) also are xr4x4 driveshafts different to cossie ones?

Can anyone offer advice (not the can of petrol and some matches advice either !!)

Hi matey

Apparently the Xr4X4 shafts are the same so I am told, but get clarification.

If they are, let me know if you need some, as I have a late XR that I am breaking!

excellent - i hope they are cos i think i may get both fronts and keep the old ones for emergencys!

I swear i was told that xr4x4 ones don't have the circlip to hold them in the diff and that they my be slightly very longer too, but need to know if they're ok to use?

iirc the XR4x4 shafts are better to use on a lowered fourby because they're longer, stops them popping out. Get the shafts and some uprated mounts and you'll be laughing.

I am but a lowly 2wd cossie owner, so dont really know to be honest - Bought the XR for bits and pieces for my aging baby!

As a result I have no use for all this 4x4 stuff, and other bits and pieces. If you can satisfy yourself that they are what you need, let me know, and I whip them out if we can agree a price!

the mounts can be changes in situ the n/s is the pain the oil filter take off extension has to be removed to remove the engine mouting arms off the engine. o/s is easy to remove the mounting arm.Obviously you will have to suport the engine

ure rite in what ure sayin the shafts out a xr are longer and they aint got the retaining clip

a put one in mine and it was a c*nt to fit a had to separate the hub from the strut to get it in as it was that much longer and everytime a took a right hand down turn it knocked like fuk so maybe i got 2 long a shaft i dont know

or then again maybe a just got the wrong shaft and genuinly did get shafted

so lost the head with it and just sold it the way it was .

the xr shafts are longer, i think mike is the guy to ask about this as he's been showcasing some ggr shafts or soemthing to solve the problem

as for changing the mounts, trolley jack underneat the sump on a bit of wood to make sure the engine dones't drop
remove the engine mount bolts (either side) remove the top bolt (in the middle) unbolt the engine mount from the block (4 bolts one side and 3 on the other)
whip it all out, stick th enew ones in, job done

obviousoy do one side at a time

well i'm positive i've got a xr4x4 on in there now cos it doesn't have a circlip? it doesn't knock it just clicks - bloody embarrasing when you pull out of a parking space!

managed to snap the clutch cable earlier being a tad aggresive with it - lucky i had a spare in the boot! i'm sure it'll be sorted soon and i can enjoy the motor!

Cheers Dojj - as long as the xr ones can be used - that's cool with me, not quite ready for GGR prices just yet!

Interesting reading generally!

Glad I have a nice and simple two wheel drive system

Rob, if I were you, I might start a new post asking whether the XR 4x4 shafts are the right way to go. I wouldnt want to sell them to you if they are wrong for you.

xr4x4 shafts are an inch longer

ive ran these for years onmy cossies and nevrr had a problem being turning left or right

they dont have a circlip that holds them either

but ideal for low cars

mine was very very low and could launch it still and dno problems and my car liked launching almost everyday and never snapped or broke one shaft

just use the actual xr shaft
there are little spring clips on the insides of the cv's you unclip, then swap shafts over and job done

all you have to do is split the bottom ball joint in order to swap them and have a mate handy to HEAVE the hub out the way when you split the clip
